Window Tinting Removal then Re-Apply?
When I bought my 1988 911 Cab the passenger and driver side windows have window tinting on them. It appears that as the windows were opened and closed, small nicks are gouged into the tinting - about the size of a pinhead.
Anyone ever removed this stuff? I saw it being applied once. Looked like a hairdryer or paint removal heat gun. Is that how you take it off? Any thoughts about putting this tinting back on again? Have it done professionally or is this a do-it-yourself job? Remember I live in sunny Florida and Porsche air conditioning leaves something to be desired (unmodified that is). Expecting California Pelican Heads to weigh in on re-applying it. Thanks Posters! |

Tint removal is a DIY job..Im not in CA but I live in So. Fl. so I hope me "weighing" in is ok :-). Film is usually in two layers..It is important to try and get both layers to peel at the same time..A heat gun may work but most pros use a steam gun and or soak. At any rate, you can just peel away on side windows. Again, try to get both layers. After you have peeled it off, you will need soapy water or Simple Pink or Tiger with a razor blade (in a holder please :-)) to get the tint film scraps and glue off. Save the edges for last (they dull the razor blade). Be certain you get all the glue of. It can be hard to see and obviously will screw up the new tint application. Tint application can be a DIY job too it just depends on how good and patient you are. If you have seen it done I wont go into it here.

I used a steam cleaner to remove all the window tint in my car. It took me two hours to complete the job; 1.5 hrs to remove tint from the rear window and 0.5hr for the sides. Make sure that if you use a steam cleaner, bring along a towel or two to wipe off water.

I wish I had seen this thread yesterday.
 I got the tint off, but it left alot of glue. Any suggestions for glue removal that won't cause more of a mess? TIA, Lawrence |

See my previous post for cleaning agents...You will need to cover up the doorpanels/rear deck with somthing to catch the mess the cleaning agent will undoubtedly make.
