Big Red Brakes - How To - under 17"

I have a set of Big Reds from a 997TT that I was planning to put on my 1970 RSR Resto-Rod. I bought 17" Fuchs from FIKSE and need advice as to how this can be accomplished.

I have:
- Big Red Calipers (6 piston front/4 rear)
- Matching Rotors
- 17" 3 piece Fuchs
- 1970-73 Green Bilstein Sport Suspension front
- 1982 Power Brake booster to help make the system work with less effort

I apologize if this subject was covered already, but I cant find the thread (feel free to reference the prior discussion).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated as I am serious about making the big brakes work.

Thanks

You will need a set of caliper adapters to mount the calipers to the struts (just happen to have a set for sale in the classifieds for 3" struts = very rare) and rotor hats to match the rotors to the hub. Steve Weiner happens to sell the hats -

Then plumb it all up

That will depend a lot on the rotors used, Up thorough 2009 they used 350x34 front rotors

Here is a 322 x32 993 Big Red on my '76 w/ 8x17 wheels

To fit the 6 piston calipers you would need a caliper adapter similar to what I have above and a rotor annulus that works w/ the calipers and fits in a 17. I have never seen that combination but there may be one

to fit the rotor annulus to the 911 hub you would need a flat hat similar to this

911 hub bolts to the hat which bolts to the rotor, the hub of course goes on the spindle

In back it should be much easier use 930 309x28mm rotor and a caliper adapter

use a 930 23.8mm m/c which will bolt to the existing vacuum booster

Great information...however, I already own the 997TT brakes and dont want to buy the 930 rears. It may be overkill, but they are 'paid for'. So, I need 3.5 or 3.0 inch adaptors - plus - the hats...and what is an ANNULUS?

what you have is besides the point, what fits and works is the point.

generally the later rotors are not a bolt on to a 911

just for instance i used a 993RS rear 322x28 on my 911, to do so the parking brake section needed some extensive modifications. I haven't worked w/ 997 rear rotors but suspect that something similar would be needed, good luck trying to find someone to do it.

On a different BBK I used the 930 rears which do bolt on w/ minor mods to the trailing arm, the 997 rear calipers will likely bolt on w/ the proper adapter and will probably work w/ the 309x28mm 930 rotors as opposed to the oe 330x8mm rotors, but even that is not for sure.

Calipers are designed to work w/ a limited range of rotor diameters and thicknesses It's for sure that a 997tt 6 piston caliper on a 380mm rotor won't fit in a 17" wheel, the 993 Big Red on a 322 fits and allows a little room for a bigger rotor, the question is does it allow enogh for a 350mm rotor, I don't know but it will be close

a rotor annulus is the part that the brake pads operate on,
this pec shows a 322x29mm 993 turbo rotor annulus, bolted to a flat hat(the black part) which bolts to the stock 911 hub which bolts to the 911 spindle

Sell the 997TT Big Reds and get 930 calipers for the car. It would look better and work better......

thanks for the continued feedback. I assumed that the E brake would be rendered inoperable, which seems ok since I cant remember the last time I used it in any car I own (new or used)...the other points are more 'aggravating" as I really want to make this work (fabricate what I need) etc. Any more help will be received happily. Where is Loudonville NY? I might like to come make your acquaintance. Im in Mt Kisco.
