911R-RWB Narrow Backdate/EFI 3.2 engine rebuild

Hello everyone

Been planning for this backdate project and engine rebuild for the past year, Finally starting this project on June 8th, 2014.The car is a 1984 porsche 3.2 Carrera with 63,000KM.

The engine's top end was rebuilt less than 9,000KM by PO but its been leaking badly, so I decided to have the engine rebuilt and while-im-at-it get the bodywork done. Engine rebuild/tune up parts were order from our Host.

Body work will be done by Akira Nakai of Rauh Welt-Begrieff (| RWB/RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF is a Porsche tuner located in Japan), Engine work & tuning will be done by Hiraoka from UZI (UZI Porsche Tuner) previous owner of Promodet Japan. I've worked closely with both of them over the past year and they have been extremely helpful, and I consider my self lucky to have the opportunity to have met them and be able to learn from them first hand experience mechanical skills and hear of their stories.

I will be documenting the process of this project and would like to share it with you over this thread.

photos from taken with iPhone on instagram :

Picked up the 911 on a wreck-truck to drop the engine at UZI on an early morning

Tsuuyama-san starts the engine drop of my car, completed within 45 minutes! he was so fast I barley had the time to take photos in between, by the time I finished having a conversation with the garage owner the engine was on a carriage! I was seriously impressed!

Once the engine was dropped, we had the body shell carried over to RWB where Nakai will finish the body work simultaneously.

while the car was sitting down waiting on Nakai's busy schedule to free up from track-day events and international travels, I had the time to do some preliminary work on removing bumpers and other parts.

meanwhile, the engine rebuild at UZI began to disassemble the intake and cam shaft covers, clutch and muffler. The oil has been leaking from different areas. Next we are removing the cylinders and the pistons.

close up of cylinders

After disassembly the case was split, and the engine crank was removed with the metal parts from the engine case removed. also the oil pump to be updated to a 964 oil pump.

we found out that the last person who rebuilt the engine replaced half the engine case bolts with aluminium 993 type while leaving the other half from original parts quite dumb i know...

Leica Monochrom Photos :

Engine case cleaned and polished as part of a service free of charge and the garage owner was happy that he could do bring back the look of the engine as new as possible.

Been working on the engine bay removing and masking parts for repaint, while Nakai-san was working on the tail lamps.

using mostly fiberglass he created a mould between the lamps and the fender.
the tail lights will be similar to the style of integrated 911R Magnus Walker's STR II.

uploaded a hyperlapse video on instagram of the process

Thanks David!

Next step at RWB is to create the fuel tank centre fill and RSR rear suspension reinforcement that you provided us

I love the integrated R lights - they will look so much nicer than the bolt-in.

Nakai welded in the fender lower light brackets and prepping them before repaint.

New seats are due in couple of months, might as well re-cover the leather and clean up the interior for a respray with the body.

I removed most of the leather interior today: door cards, rear quarter panels, parcel shelf and rear seats. the sound deadening stuff on the floor came off rather easily with my hands.

next, I'm removing the interior glue, I'm using silicon-off chemical which worked pretty good so far it just needs a lot of scrubbing.
