I can't take it anymore. Now we are talking of banning all knives on planes, no parking in front of airports etc etc etc. Typical left wing stupidity. I will post a standing bet here today that I can smuggle a six inch knife onto any flight any day I want even if they are "banned" I will put up a half million in assets in escrow to all takers.
"hey ashraf, we should hijack a plane" "nah ishmed, weapons aren't allowed anymore" This is so assine I can hardly stand it. Just keep giving up our freedoms people, and keep putting restrictions on honest folks who are the only ones who will obey them. This is sad. I figure I'll stop ranting in a week or so. Thanks again Wayne |

Lendadaddy...I agree with you on this one. I'd feel absolutely naked without my old 3 bladed case brand pocketknife. So, guess my choice is a simple one. I won't fly. If not flying works for John Madden, it'll work for me! Never did like being locked in an aluminum tube, hurtling through space at 600 mph anyway...No bet, by the way. As Wayne already posted...carbon fiber, many other ways, many other weapons.

There is one easy way to stop this from happening again: ground all planes.
Shy of that, nothing will stop a dedicated maniac who's willing to sacrifice his own life. The airport security measures are like most of the other things the country is doing right now, from congressional sing-alongs, to enormous revenue allocations, to prime-time hotel SWAT raids, to fighter jets and aircraft carriers posturing off of both coasts -- it's all there to send a reassuring message to American citizens. The travel industry is an important piece of the economy. Will any of it do any real good? Probably not, but that's not the point. It's about money. The government wants the economy to roll forward, more than anything else. They use a lot of PR resources to do that. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page |

When was the last time an Israeli aircraft was highjacked out of Israel? Proper airport security can be accomplished, but it will cost money, and it will be inconvenient.
I spent an hour talking to three different people before I was allowed to get on a TWA flight out of Tel Aviv. They searched about ever other bag. The fact that I was a US citizen but born in Germany required repeated explanation. A real hassle, but it was worth the peace of mind. |

Air Force One, tommorrow. Good one!
but they already have knifes on that plane. Indeed the airport security scanners are inplace to give the image of security rather than security. |

WCKrause had the right idea. Try to get near an El Al airplane sometime.
I have been in aviation for 29 years and they are the best in the industry. Every El Al airplane that is not flying will have a security car parked underneath, and the two people in the car WILL have an UZI automatic weapon with them. Everyone of the El Al security scanners (they refuse to use locals) are from Israel and come to the various countries and work only as scanners for El Al. They are paid a reasonable wage and return home when their tour is completed. NO one gets on their airplane without their knowledge and through inspection. PERIOD. As for you guys worried about safety. I fly the things, but the guys who toss bags or work at Burger King in the terminal go around the security points, I have to go through them and am searched. As long as the workers at the airports are not checked and its possible to waltz into the airport then we will have a security problem in this country. Europe will not put up with this and thus has stopped the hijacking. Put sky marshalls on the airplanes and when anyone tries to hijack the airplane, shoot them. Simple... and no probation or parole... JA PS I fly for hours in the airplane, fighting storms only to land in snow or ice or a thunderstorm. I get scared only when I get in my car and drive home with the nuts on our highways. When is the last time they did a recheck of their driving license? How many are drunk? How many are 80+ and cannot see one block in front of them? You want to be scared, then so be it, but driving your car is the most dangerous thing you do on a regular basis... I parachute for a hobby and its safe compared to driving! |

Jack Olsen, you took the words directly out of my mouth. Security will be as lax as ever in 3-6 months(if that long). It's sad. I would rather be inconvenienced, but safe. Of course I would complain about delays, but who wouldn't? There really isn't a foolproof defense for something like this. Even a PHALAANX on each side of the Pentagon would not have stopped the airplane impact...

El Al runs such tight security because of the constant terorist threat. They have to treat each flight like Air Force One or odds are it will get hijacked. I heard an aviation security expert interviewed and he said there are no technological barriers to the US having the same level of security. It's just that if we did, our max air capacity would be 20% of what it is now. Not a 20% reduction, one fifth of our current air capacity.
Jack is right. Just as it is impossible to guard the president from a motivated and skilled crazy person who gets lucky and is willing to trade his life for the president's, it is impossible to have perfect safety against air pirates. There's always a way around any precaution; if a precaution can be imagined, so can the way around it. We're just lucky this hasn't happened to before, on US soil, at least. May God have mercy on all our souls. |

I remember hearing something about a journalist making a similar point. He smuggled a disassembled gun in on about four separate occasions. The guy ended up serving some time for it, but he made his point.
