G50 swap into '74 car: what's required...cutting?
I have a tube-frame race car that took a 2.4l with a 915, now I have a 964 engine & a G50 going in. I have both transmission mounts to choose from and noticed that Patrick MS has a G50 conversion mount that bolts into an earlier frame such as my '74.
The car has coilovers now: torsions are not used. Will any cutting be required to fit the G50? It appears the stock 915 mount takes a pair of standard 911 motor mounts at each end. Thanks experts! See old picture from a couple of years ago.... Mark ![]()

No expert but I have looked at PMS's website and they offer a short bell housing G50.
I think this is to alleviate cutting on the car. Other's will chime in.

I don't mind cutting the car, I like my G50 the way it is anyway

I'm assuming that it's a 5 speed. From what I have read you can cut the center out of the torsion tube or move the whole engine rearward or shorten the bell housing or combinations thereof.

Which G50 are you using?
You can cut and splice a G50 torsion bar tube if a 3.2 G50. As your car is a tube frame you have more options. If it was me I would source a 993 6 speed and regear for the tracks you run. It would entail more work but you are already on the slippery slope. |

Mark,
The most common method is to cut and replace the torsion tube center section. Here is an idea of the effort. G50 Conversion Project Begins It should not be too difficult. Given that you have a tube rear end and you have the vertical struts coming down from your cross member bar into the torsion tube you could probably cut the center out of the torsion tube, cap off the ends and then reinforce the structure into your cage. Pay attention to fore/aft movement as well. There is a thread where this was done many years ago. I will see if I can find it.

This is the thread I was looking for.
Project **G50** you can see where the cuts are and the type of bracing used to tie the two sides of the cut torsion tube in place. You might be OK to just section the torsion tube for clearance.
