914-6 valve adjustment?

Does any one have a link to this? do I lower the motor to get lower valve cover off?

If you have unmodified 911 Turbo valve covers, yes, you have to lower the motor to remove them. If you have the stock type covers, you don't. (The mod involves machining off parts of the ribs on the outside of the turbo valve covers to allow them to clear the obstacles.)

To be truthful, I've never had to do this, because I use 911SC lower covers which clear with no problem. I'm sure someone will chime in pretty soon.

Oh wow. I have a stock 911T motor in mine. I'd hate to have to lower the motor for a valve adjustment!!!

914/6: Turbo Valve cover mod

Here are pics of the mod that is necessary when using Turbo Valve covers on a 914/6 conversion.

Makes that "upgrade" less of an upgrade, huh? That's why I use SC lower valve covers. Sturdy, rarely warp under the kind of heat a 2.0-2.4 makes, and they're a drop-in. Oh, and cheaper, too.

I thought setting the timing would be. With the original Marelli. I sucked a mirror right out of the frame once and was vacuuming glass out of the engine for years afterward.

Timing? 2 people and a carefully marked flywheel!

Through the hole in the top of the bell housing. You just pry the rear tin out a bit and it's right there ............. Actually, with an adjustable timing light, you need a flywheel with only TDC correctly marked. (Remember, the TDC mark on an original 2.0 flywheel won't be right on a later crankshaft. Tricky devils ....................)

For the valve covers, you can double nut the studs and remove them where the picture shows the machined valve covers. Then you can get them off. Have them machined before putting them back.

Alternators are easy on a 914-6. I can do one without pulling the intake or the engine. There is a great write up on it here : How to replace a 914-6 alternator.

The concept of repeatedly removing and replacing steel fasteners in aluminum bothers me. Porsche (and others) used studs for a very good reason. I suppose you could Helicoil the cam towers in the affected locations.

The best advice I ever got for doing valves in a 914-6 was to pay someone else to do it..

I have to do valves in a few weeks, and plan to just drop the engine to do it.
