Vermont First Engine Drop-87 Targa

OK Gents,

Finally started the process! Going to drop the motor and at least do a top-end with some of the "while ur in there" stuff.

Newbie here mostly. Biggest project so far has been rear bearing replacement which worked out nice.

Along with Waynes books I am using this as a guide for the drop:

87 Carrera engine drop (1 of 36)

Of couse step 5 of 36 I get stuck. I have disconnected the speedo wires, but how do I push them through the firewall with this black grommet in the way. I tried to pry the grommet away from the wall with no luck:

Thanks and plenty more questions to come I'm sure!!

Mike

Note the orientation for reinstall, I took a photo to be sure it does not go back backwards

one better on the picture recommendation...

lately I've been using the video camera on my phone. It offers the ability to record at slow motion, 1/4 speed and I take a ten or fifteen second clip of the area I'm disassembling, making sure to get the area from various angles and it's worked out marvelously.

I might have pushed that grommet out from the inside when I did my drop. As DRACO says, removing the sensor from the trans is an option, but be careful that you don't let any dirt in the hole, and be aware that if you tip the trans, that smelly trans oil will spill out.

That step-by-step link you referenced is very good.

...and yes, you can't take too many pictures! If you get stuck, there are many, many pics of engines/drops on the forum, and someone almost always seems to be in the midst and ready to take pics of their own projects to refresh your memory.

Good luck, and have fun!

Been there, Done that, and lived through it!

The hardest part is already done; just getting started! Let us know what died inside the engine.
Good Luck!

Fellow Pelicans

I made some progress today. I have disconnected:

-Battery
-Drained oil
-half shafts
-Hard Oil S line-was very tight and rusty
-Large oil hose
-High temp heater hoses-nasty rusty clamps
-Main ground at body pan/chasis
-Fuel line at filter
-Electrical lines at left in bay

Please take a look at this picture to see if I missed anything:

This corresponds to slide #6 here from the guide:
87 Carrera engine drop (6 of 36)

But mine has this huge cable that wraps up front, is this the cruise control cable?

How do I disconnect that?

Other hangups I know I will run into.

Slide #20-Remove clutch sleeve from tranny" OK, How?
Slide #16- "Undo shifter Coupler" Um OK, How?
Slide #13-"Undo accerelator rods" How? I tried to pull but didn't want to break.

Any tricks to the sway bar from slide #12?

Sorry for all the dumb questions but I don't want to F-up everything!

I'm pretty sure I'll never get this thing back together but I'm pressing on!!

Thanks in advance.

Mike

(Anybody in VT want to come and help tomorrow? I got beer....... )

1. I like to remove the cruise control servo at the fire wall held by 2 10MM nuts, it requires removal of the heater blower for easier access. This also allows you to not raise the car so much to slide the engine out.

2. Clutch sleeve at tranny, using a bfs, push helper spring forward to release load on the cable then disconnect the cable and loosen the 15MM jam nuts. Remove circlip and drop both clutch arms, take note the there should be two dust covers, those need replacing.

3. Coupler, use a 4MM allen tool and loosen at coupler, slide it off. Make certain you are square, do not strip it.

4. Accelerator linkage, check for a small pin at the side of the ball socket, remove it, then position the socket straight and pop it out straight. It will not release if the ball socket is at an angle. If pin is missing. Use bfs and wedge it in and pop it out, it may have rust welded. Needless to say clean and lube.

5. Sway bar, remove the bolt at the dog bone/ rop linkage. It is allot easier on the ground, no load.

PM me if you need more assist.

Jim

Thanks for all the replies!!

Great news: It's out!!

I got all the connections except a fuel line on the left part of the engine bay. We lowered it slowly and saw the line before it got tight.

The clutch slave was a ***** to dissconnect and so was the ball joint for the throttle until I found the little wire at the base of the ball.

Lots of oil breather tubes and vacuum lines that I will be amazed if I ever get back together, in fact if I ever get this thing back in will be a miracle!!

OK, so now what is the trick to getting the car high enough to wheel the motor out?

Where do I jack the car since the engine is now on the ground?

I would rather not remove the bumper.

Also, does anybody know what type of muffler this is?

Thanks again in advance.

Remove the bumper, if not carefully use a jack under locked tires to raise to needed height, a little bit at a time, make sure chocks in front wheels are secure.

If you remove the AFM it will require less height to slide it out.

Thanks! Anytime you're in South Burlington near the High School come on by and see my mess errr, I mean project!!

I have met Rick at Eurotech. I'm hoping to pay him to come over and check my work in the assembly phase. Who knows I may get frustrated and have him finish the whole project, we'll see.

Mike

OK Gents,

Made some great progress today. Jacked up the car nice and high to wheel out motor/tranny.

But not before I fabricated these highly engineered wheel chocks!!

I used the center wood bar across to position the jack, no remove bumper.

And of course the obligitory "Look at me" pic;

With a bit of effort I was able to separate the tranny from the the engine. The clutch fork shaft was tricky to remove only because I had no idea how it was set up.

Remove this bolt which holds on the cover to the shaft:

Then use the same bolt and screw it into the "shaft hole", then use a set of plyers to gently pull out shaft. Then remove three bolts holding on tranny, seperate the throttle linkage here:

Just pull out cotter pin, slip off sleeve and separate the linkage. There was another sensor on the tranny which I have no idea is but it came off easy.

Clutch was a cinch to remove as well.

All for now.

Engine out

Nice job. We have an 89 Targa the same color. I know one day I will be faced with the same task. Thanks for sharing the experience!

Nice job, I just got done dropping and reinstalling mine in my 89 Targa. Good luck, it is not so bad (well bad for your wallet as the "while I'm in there... goes insane).
