Exhaust exit through rear fender - photo request?

I've been messing around with an exhaust project on my '85 911 and have two options for mounting the muffler/backbox. The backbox is a triangular shape so when mounted onto a flat plate as 911 exhausts do the muffler would exit through the bumper itself a bit like the photo below but with wider exits.

The second option is to try to mount the backbox at an angle so that it exits at the bottom like traditional cars although the cut outs for the current exhausts are too narrow so the bumper would need to be cut anyway.

The car is far from standard anyway and runs a fibreglass rear fender/bumper so nothing is irreversible but wanted to see if there are any more photos out there where people have done similar so I can see what it looks like.

This is the only photo I can find - looks kinda cool though:

Can anyone help?

I've posted a few alternates here:

Closest to what you want is shown below, forget where I heisted it from. Tried to get a detail shot blown up in the corner but it isn't as clear as I would have liked.

EDIT-1
Looks like that white car might be owned by turbochad.

you got my attention.

I want to see the exhaust through the rear fender.

That really sounds interesting.

I think this might be a British/American translation problem!

esonefour 06-23-2014 11:03 PM

Gemballa do it on a lot of there cars, never really like the thought of something hot/red hot in the middle of a bumper.

ALEX P 06-24-2014 04:31 AM

Cheers for the pics of the white one Kach

I always find it difficult posting on Pelican with bumpers/fenders mufflers/backbox/silencer sills/rockers petrol/gas etc etc, you lot didn't half make a mess of our language ;) :D

Good shout on the Gemballa - Does look like they have done it on a few cars. I guess it could end up something like this but on an impact bumper car with narrow body IROC bumpers (fenders..... whatever!).

I like this car better than a Singer. Built by owner at BBI Autosport

I want to do the same thing, any ideas on how to put the muffler together? The owner of the car in the first pic in this post had it for sale a few years ago and made up a muffler based on 2 magnaflows. Should have bought the setup when I had the chance...

My little brother is an artist (to say the least) with a welder.

When I bite the bullet on headers, my plan:

Headers, to straight-pipes with see-through bullet mufflers that angle up and in (toward bottom of lic plate). They will converge into an X-Pipe and exit out and through bumper
:)

Will be unique looking, provide rear-end eye candy, and a LOUD/Unique noise :) :) :)

Doing it with a Magnaflow should be nice and easy. Here is a couple of snaps of my current setup but with an ally bumper. Where I have turned the pipes down you would just turn them up to exit through the bumper.

The Magnaflow is basically just an X-Pipe. I've kinda incorporated the X-pipe design into my experimental exhaust but this is more for packaging purposes as I'm going away from my headers and towards 993 heat exchangers.

Chad did a write up on his unique exhaust in 2010
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/572818-magnaflow-exhaust-through-bumper.html

The white Carrera has since been turned into a very sucessful E class dedicated
race car.

Chad was kind enough to sell me his complete through the bumper system and it is now a welcome addition to my '84 Targa,

Nice one Willie, that looks great.

Thanks for posting.

ALEX P 08-25-2014 08:10 AM

Well, I trial fitted the silencer and got creative with the hole saw. It will need a lot of finishing but it all fits ok :D

THAT. Is very cool.

Big distance between tips and angled exit, very unique.

Nice

Couple of quick questions:

Has the heat from the exhaust damaged the paint with yours or do you run some sort of reflector/heat shield?

There isn't much clearance around the tips on yours - Obviously the engine moves around a bit on the mounts - Have you had the tips making contact with the bumper?

joe payne 08-26-2014 10:24 AM

Alex, sorry it's not my car. I saw it a few years ago and thought it had some cool mods.
They should have marketed the cool NASA intake on the front bumper.

911SauCy 08-26-2014 10:36 AM

That is the same car I posted earlier, with different wheels and the lid closed.
