yep, that's pretty much how it's done...except for you're not supposed to cut the entire gutter off first...you do it in 1-3" sections...cut, weld , cut, weld...etc.

edit: it's also interesting to note he's bumped the side window frames out to the crease.

wish I had the guts...it looks soooo cool.

I have seen that car before. Isn't it a cab to coupe conversion!

The side window mod is for flush-mount windows - exactly what I need to do to install lexan windows in my fiberglass hardtop - now I need to figure out how to execute that in fiberglass.

Yep... it looks like a Rennline project car.

In the first pic you can clearly see that this was once a Targa or cab. Should make for a pretty stiff body with the Targa/Cab reinforcements.

Definitely a Rennline car. Can tell by the little toy 911 in the corner. He had it at hershey. Not to many of those floating around. Nice guy, nice cars.

Why are you shaving the gutters off? Is it just cosmetic?

It'll be interesting to see what the painted, finished car looks like.

looks like he is building a ruf replica. the yellowbird (original) had shaved rain gutters. they also had about an extra inch on the rear flares ...now that would be a nice mod (IMHO).

Per "Paul Frere's Porsche Racing Cars of the 70's", Porsche shaved the rain gutters off of a 935/78 and did some wind tunnel tests of the aero impact. There was a 3% drag reduction and a 23% increase in rear down force. That's pretty signficant, but the then current Group 5 rules wouldn't allow Porsche to race the car that way.

RUF cars did this on some of his cars because it was so effective. I've always been surprised that Jack Olsen didn't do this the BB or BBII, since he's not shackled by any restrictive rules.

maybe he feels inadequate and has to compensate with a bigger wing.

Regards,

Jerry Kroeger

I'm still contemplating shaving the gutters off of my a-pillars. My fiberglass top doesn't have gutters to start with.

Targa's have no rain gutters, would they do any better in the old wind tunnel?

I'll be impressed if it goes as fast as a 935/78...

Thom, I think the front ones are the ones to shave. Those little CF fillers are a way to check it out first (make your own). Then put on some of P'kids mirrors. Then start finding a sympathetic engineer with wind tunnel access....

They still do on the leading edges of the windshield.

Too much bondo for my liking. I guess there is no way to keep some semblance of strength by grinding them flat.

Targas do have rain gutters and are aerodynamicly terrible, especially w/ the top off and the widows open.

But who cares? You can get a great tan and enjoy the car at the same time

Dang, what was I thinking? I have to paint mine. I swear the paint just jumps off of those rain gutters at the slightest chance.
