Post how many of you drive with your kids

in your 911? The very cool Porsche commercial on Speedvision notwithstanding, I'm wondering how many of you end up lugging your kids around in your 911. Just trying to make sure I'm not being an irresponsible parent by subjecting my son to riding in a P-car. Although I think it should by all rights make him feel like the coolest kid in school...

I would love to....but the wife is adament about my Porsche not being as safe as her Stupid Ugly Vehicle (SUV).

My three kids have never been in the car, while moving...they love to sit in it, but that's as far as it has gone.

I took my daughter to school this morning. My 911 takes me everywhere I go. If someone wants to go with me, they get to ride in The Car.

Oh, and by the way (and many of you know this already) it's pretty hard to get into a collision with my car. Not impossible of course, but many idiots have made excellent efforts at colliding with my car, and none have succeeded. That reminds me of a thread I wanted to start.

Both kids (10 & 5) ride in the P-Car, although I'm not terribly wild about the 5 year old wearing a lap belt in the back. He really likes when its just 'the boys' (he & Dad), so he gets to be in the front, looking for other Porsches to wave to!

it is mostly just my son and I, so he could ride in the front. As far as the back seats, I suppose that a shoulder harness could be retrofitted (the 964's have them stock as I recall), and that would make it safer than lap belt alone. Anyone done this?

Depending on the day I take either two or three kids in the 911. Used to have two car seats in the back. Difficult to get them in securely, but can be done. The baby is in the passenger seat in a baby car seat. The kids like riding in the car and point out the other porsches they see! Got to love it.

Not mine, since I don't have any ... but, carrying other people's kids to/from Jr. High School, movies, the mall, yes! And, demonstrations of 'active safety' are usually enjoyed by my passengers, too. Some are amazed at the braking/handling/acceleration capabilities that seem rather miraculous compared to a typical minivan, SUV, sedan, or truck!

MikeZ ... maybe you should enlighten your wife about the performance capabilites of her SUV, and it's lack of an 'active safety' capability (and perhaps hers, too) when she is carrying your kids in her presumed safe cocoon, that really isn't too safe against reinforced concrete, busses, 18-wheelers, and larger-class SUV's/RVs!

For those not familiar with the term 'active safety' ... it is using the high performance capabilities of vehicle to avoid life-threatening situations in which you WOULD become an accident victim in a vehicle/driver combination of lesser capabilities! Unfortunately, many 911 owner/drivers DO NOT, or can't practice 'active safety' for one reason or another!

An SUV is very unsafe when it is skidding on its roof.
35% of all traffic fatalities involve a rollover.
In single car traffic accident fatalities, 50% of deaths involve a rollover.
SUVs are top heavy and far more prone to roll over than a passenger car. They also are don't stop as well or maneuver as well, particularly in emergency situations.
The real world "safety" of SUVs is highly overrated, IMO.

active safety:

As soon as I get my 911, I'm looking for a good driving school. While I have a lot of years behind the wheel, I know I can do better. Anyone recommend one in SoCal?

Most wont believe this but I actually feel safer with her (2 year old) in a 1968 Porsche that I sometimes have to stop, get out, hit carbs with screwdriver handle, to keep moving RATHER than wife's Mercedes SUV. Once took off ramp too quickly and thought we were going to roll. I truly don't like it, don't like driving it and have begun process of finding something else.

Upside to kid in front is you can hi-five, sing, pinch, etc. I know that detracts from safety but I just can't help it!

Tell your wives to eff themselves!

I'd be on the phone with a divorce attorney in seconds if she ever told me not to put my kid in the 911
For kreissake, I was brought up in an E-type with the top down. When my mom and dad were both in the car I rode in the middle.
Good drivers with good handling cars have a MIRACULOUS ability to avoid accidents.
My 911 is a family car.

All the time . In the front with a chid seat and safety belt. I sometimes notice this slight smile on my daughter's face when we accelerate through 1st and 2nd . We use it for transport, errands and now sometimes for a just for the hell of it ride around town!

Thanks for the distacting topic!

Cool

My 7-year-old loves it. I've had three kids in the car frequently. It's my daily driver and that includes driving to soccer practice too (I'm the coach).

As far as safety goes, a friend of mine was concerned about her son riding in the front of my '86 Targa with the top out. She somehow thought he might get ejected out the top. The real irony is that she drives an old Honda Civic with aluminum-can doors. I would bet my 911 would withstand any crash and protect the passengers better.

As far as the lap-belts in the back seat go, the front seats look like they would act sort of as air-bags. The main reason for shoulder belts in the front is to prevent you from whipping your head into the dash or the steering wheel. The back of the front seats would provide a better impact zone.

I lead a church affiliated scout troop, and it is common for me to have two or three kids in the car. The parents don't complain, and the kids are always begging for a ride. The policy always has been that if you act up, no rides in pocketrocket, an interesting incentive to keep your nose clean

You can't live life in fear of everything that has potential to hurt or kill you. Since I am lucky enough to own a 911, it would be a crime to deny my 3 little ones the experience my car has to offer. Yes, my wife's Land Rover would probably fare better in a collision, but obviously I'm a much smaller and faster target, so it could be argued that her truck would be more likely to be IN a collision in the 1st place! I try to do the best by my kids, but I will not allow them to grow up in a protective bubble. Life is too short. Ironically, the sales brochure for my wife's L.R. Disco states something like, " 20 years from now, you will regret what you DIDN"T do." No I won't!

We don't have children, but man, the dogs love riding in the SC. Scupper, the cocker, gets a real twinkle in his eye when I let him steer!

My harness bar puts a crimp on the kids in the back seat. When they ride back there, I tell them to duck if it looks like an accident is going to happen. I hate to replace dental work, especially of somebody else's kids!
Just kidding folks.
