If you're going to install new shocks yourself, look here...

I finally tackled the task of installing new Bilstein Sport shocks on my 86 euro carrera last week. The car is off getting aligned, lowered and corner balanced at S-Car-Go racing now, and I'll be putting it to the test this coming weekend at an autocross with a DE soon to follow.

I looked at many different sources for instructions or tips and tricks for installing the shocks. I found a lot of good information (thanks to everyone on this board) but I couldn't find a comprehensive set of instructions that were detailed enough to really let me know what I was in for. Soooooo, I decided to write them myself after tackling the job.

The results are here: http://www.momentarylaps.com/tech/shock_install.pdf

Please feel free to critique either the document or my installation methods. I'll gladly revise the doc if someone has something good to add. I did not try to generalize the instructions, as I've only really ever worked on my own car, so I don't know what is different for Koni's, etc.

Enjoy!

Dean

Good write up Dean.

A couple comments -

The easy way to pull the top nut off the front struts is an impact wrench - but - most anyone who has an impact wrench probably doesn't need these instructions. The other way to get that nut off is to hold the big toothed washer stationary with a pipe wrench while loosening the nut.

It's actually easier to do the fronts if you don't take the wheels off. Raise and lower the car with the jack and wheels will move the strut up and down as needed.

All the hassle of accessing the rear strut tops can be avoided by lowering the engine a few inches. Takes five minutes and makes life easy.

Thumbs up

Yup, that's a good tech article Dean. Ask our host if he'll include it.
Did you take any photos as you proceeded?

Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos. I only thought to AFTER I had it all back together!

If anyone is planning to do this job sometime soon, please take photos and send them to me. I'm happy to include them to make the write-up more complete.

Chuck - I'll add your comments.

Thanks!

Dean
