New Clutch - Starter Just Spins...
Just installed a new clutch kit in a friends '85 911 with a 915.
All done and reinstalled and the starter just spins. It sounds like the starter is spinning but not throwing out. Pull the starter and check it on the floor, it's fine. Is it possible the new ring gear is smaller? Pelican only lists one clutch kit for this car... I am worried I have to pull the engine again...and I'm stumped now.

Just guessing here, but maybe check to see if it's wired correctly. Does it click when turn the key? If not, maybe it's simply that the solenoid isn't connected (??).

It is wired properly, it spins, you can here it.
It just doesn't grab hold of the ring gear to spin the engine.

The very same thing happened to me when a wrench omitted the ring gear.....No teeth....

Confirm if the starter ring gear is installed. The other toothed ring gear on the flywheel (closest to the crankcase) is for ignition timing. It happens once in awhile.

I'd say the ring gear is still on the old flywheel.

The ring gear is there, I think.... I will confirm.
Perhaps Sherwood has nailed this... FML. I thought we were done...

If it's there, here are some related starter ring gears (bolts directly to the pressure plate, not flywheel). Not sure of the differences. If the ring gear is new, check the paperwork/packaging to confirm:
Turbo: 930 116 230 02 Carrera: 911 116 230 02 G50: 950 116 143 01 You should be able to confirm the presence of a starter gear with a mirror through the starter opening in the bell housing. ![]() When bench-testing the starter as it would be installed, the pinion gear should move forward as the motor engages. If the motor just rotates, the pinion gear linkage is malfunctioning. Sherwood |

I believe someone failed to recycle part #5 during this repair....
Thanks for your help. The only thing to be decided is if we pull the trany+engine (again) or just the engine. Thanks for finding my stupid error.

Sadly, this is bonehead move #2. We left the snap ring off the third gear synchro and remembered just as we were closing the case up....
Tomorrow we will push-start the car and make sure the tranny portion is done.

Don't do it The clutch bolts will protrude through the back of the flywheel
Since Murphy seems to assisting you the bolts will saw through the case

That might be good advice. I will connect the linkage and make sure I can get all five gears and reverse and begin the extraction.
