I've got a 78 SC Targa with just over 72K miles. Recently, the speedometer needle has started jumping around. When I rev the engine, the needle jumps from zero to maybe 10 to 20 mph even when the car is standing still. When I'm moving, if I let off the gas the needle drops to near zero, only to resume functioning when I depress the accelerator again. Wassup??
Thanks for any suggestions. johnjr 78 SC Targa ![]() |

Check the speedometer pickup unit on the passenger side of the transmission; the pickup is a little potted disk held into a round recess in the side of the transmission (just forward and up from the drive axle) by a spring clip. The pickup unit may be defective or loose. Also check for a loose wiring connection; there are a set of connectors in the center tunnel under the cover plate back behind the front seats. Also check wiring connections on back on speedometer. I'd start at the pickup unit. Cheers, Jim
