Sport muffler conversion $250.00 good price?

A local header/exhaust guy here on the San Francisco Penninsula has offered to do a Sport muffler conversion on my sausage muffler. My car is a '70 with webers.

The muffler will be opened up and be modded to RS innards and have two exiting exhaust pipes in the center of the muffler. The cost is $250.00 and I'm wondering if this is a reasonable price for the mod.

I think an original RS 2 in 2 out mufflers cost about $650.00

Thanks.

$250 is reasonable to simply remove your muffler and replace it without even doing anything.

Good point, at the end of the day, you're paying somebody $250 to change your muffler into an unknown that may or may not be acceptable to you (sound quantity and sound quality-wise) and will be non-reversable. While a lot cheaper than buying one new, if you don't like what you end up with, you'd need to buy new AND be out $250.

Can the shop arrange for you to sample his product on another vehicle?

^^^^its the same exact conversion as the factory sport mufflers. He had a factory sport muffler and opened it up and copied it.
The converted muffler sounds just like the factory one.

You get what you pay for

Can someone define what the above statement means?

Here's some commonly-perceived assumptions:
"A "low" price equals substandard labor, craftsmanship and/or a shady transaction."
"A "high" price equals high quality and the best for the money"

Both are foolish assumptions. YMMV

BTW, modifying a factory muffler > sport muffler specs is not rocket science, especially since those plans have been used for about 40 years, but I understand some owners are overly cautious with mods. In that case, do what is need to do, pay whatever is needed to increase confidence in the mod.

Sounds like a great deal, but you might want to try and find a sound clip cause those mufflers are wicked loud.

$250 should buy a couple of hours of labor, and I wouldn't expect the mod to take very long. So I'd say it's an OK deal, but not a great one.

If you do it, I'd love to see the results. I'm local, and have one of those mufflers on the shelf. $250 seems reasonable to me if he does nice work, and it sounds good.

Sounds like a reasonable price with labor, materials, shop costs etc these days.

I paid $35.00 for mine. I supplied all the materials The shop fabricated the end caps as part of the price.

Could be too much, could be a bargain. If it turns out well, whatever it cost will seem small compared to the years of enjoyment. If you hate it, every time you start the car you will curse the $250 you spent.

You pays your money and you takes your chances. Like with anything.

Here's another example of a rally muffler with caps. I don't think there was any one design for the caps. Everyone seems to have done it differently.
