Insurance

As a mechanic and an engineer I seem to enjoy the cars that are easier to work on. i.e. I like the older cars.

To spare all the details I am sick and tired of USAA trying to total any car that gets bumped, rubbed or scratched.

Who do you all use for auto insurance? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Andrew

I'd ask around in your area, especially with the body shops you like. They'll know who's generally easy to deal with vs. who tries to screw you.

I'm reasonably happy with Geico, but a lot of people hate them.

If they're considered classic, Hagerty can be your friend. Their valuation tool on their website gives good information and can help for determining values.

As long as you have a primary driver, I'd check with them. Grundy and Leland West are other options. Either way, you'd want agreed value policies for the cars, not just normal auto insurance. Good Luck!

Grundy is cool, had them for 5 years - but I've never tested them / had an accident.
Have had USAA for a long time for the house-hold cars, but lately it seems that their service has gone down hill.

on edit:
come to think of it, USAA wanted me to use their collector's ins co, American something or other.

Hagerty.

Insurance

I am a 51 year member of USAA, but I dropped their auto insurance years ago and went with a company called American National Property and Casualty, an old line company out of Missouri if I recall correctly. Very happy with them, particularly their coverage and price.

Later I purchased my Porsche 911T. ANPAC has what they call their GOLD program for cars like many of us have. I have valued it to the self-valuation limit, $25,000. We could get into puts and takes for an appraised value, which I'm sure would be higher, but I have not chosen to do so yet.

Basically I can't race my car (don't want to) and can't drive over 7,500 miles a year (couldn't if I tried!). That's it and I pay $87 every 6 months. The car has exactly the same high coverage that my daily Subaru driver has which costs an additional $414 every 6 months.

Won't work probably for daily drivers but might appeal to many.

It's in your interest to check around.

I simply added my 86 to my current State Farm account. I have my home and DD's through them. It doesn't cover track/autocross like Hagerty but it does use an agreed upon value of $30k and ended up being $26/month!

Tried insuring my 80 911sc through Hagerty but their restrictions were a bit tight. State Farm insured under their classic program for an agreed upon $23000 actual cash value (value appraisal from Hagerty) for $22 a month with a 7500 mile annual limit. State farm will also re-value as the market changes if you can show the cars valuation has changed and as I previously mentioned they accepted a printout from the Hagerty website as proof of valuation.

Same here. I have been a USAA member for 36 years. My dad was a 60 year member.

I switched my house and cars to ANAPAC. My 85 911 is an agreed value with appraisal of $30K and it cost me 22 bucks a month.

We had a hail storm wipe out our roof last year and ANAPAC did not blink at a total replacement and after it was all done my premium went down! And they send out a check like USAA if you go three years with no claim.

I still have my retirement savings and a credit card with USAA. They are a great company but the insurance rates are just not competitive.

I've been thinking the "classic car" policies offered may be an option when I've finally got my car on road, but reading this reminded me of a policy I had on another classic car I have. Part of their agreement was no race tracks as well.

So who would a person use for insurance if they don't plan on putting mounds of miles on the car, falls in the "classic vehicle" category, yet maybe a person would like to participate in a track day or two here and there??

One of the problems that USAA has is that the vast majority of their members/policy holders live in states prone to hurricanes and tornados; while insurance companies do share the risks with each other it's location, location, location, for this industry too. USAA used to be a very closed company catering only to commissioned and warrant officers of the Armed Forces. They chose to open it up to all service members, increasing the risk and causing rates to skyrocket. ANPAC, on the other hand, doesn't suffer from the first problem.

+1 Hagerty; never heard a complaint. They are in the classic car business.

I have used a company called Safeco, broker is Sneed Robinson and Gerber out of Memphis. Two porsches, limited miles, agreed value of 20k per car, $455/year. Had a major claim last year when car was wrecked when it was getting the engine rebuilt (long story I would like to forget) in another state. Received one estimate and the payment was to me in less than one week. I was extremely happy my insurance company took care of me and then went after the perpertrator of the accident. (Their car was uninsured, unregistered). When the 70 911T was fixed, it cost me an extra 6k for total repaint to original color and some major rust repair. Steve PS. I use USAA for my other vehicles but was way out of line for the Porsches in price.

I use State Farm also, my '88 is the best part of three family cars (they also carry my home)
$150/year, agreed upon value of $30K, no mileage limitations even though I could live with almost any such, it's not a DD.

Used Leland West many years ago until their incompetence and arrogance made me switch.
