Front brake line fitting cap
Ok , here is what I need to do. I have to replace the front wheel bearings and need to remove the brake line from the caliper so I can remove the hubs. Yeah what German decided to not make the line clip on the strut. The clip is not removable on an 85 Carrera. So I will have to open the system up.
Question is what is the thread size and type so when I take the caliper off I can cap the line so all the brake fluid does not leak all out when changing the bearings on the hubs. Thank You Len |

A cap would be nice, but I don't know if you will find one. You could get a junkyard (or better) hard line from the rubber line to the caliper, and cut it and plug the line, making a cap out of it.
Me, I'd take a broom or something like it, and use it to push the brake pedal down maybe half its stroke. This closes off the ports from the brake fluid reservoir. This means you don't have the weight of the fluid in the reservoir trying to push fluid out of the line, as you would have with the MC in the full no brake position. And the only fluid you might lose would be that which tries to dribble out despite the fact that it is a small tube, and the fluid itself will resist flowing out without an opening to the atmosphere behind it. For that matter, I have been able, with the pads out and the outer bearings removed, to maneuver the rotor and attached hub out of the caliper with no disconnecting. And to put it back after doing whatever it was I wanted to do. Haven't had a brake line fail. Is good to make provision ahead of time to tie the caliper (heavy buggers) up once you get it out of the way. But somewhere in the world someone must have made a male and a female cap for these lines. |

On my cars that I have installed SS brake lines....the adapter from Metric to AN is usually at the fitting on the strut.... so I have some AN caps.....
Get some M? something to AN=3 adapters from someplace like BAT. Of course my cars hardly resemble the way they left the factory... So you may find an easier path... Many years ago I brazed closed some fittings to use

I do as suggested and push/hold down the brake pedal about 1/2 way.
Next I take a small rubber cap and push it over the actual flared line end. Just ignore and slightly push the threaded fitting up/out of the way on the hard line. If your car will be down awhile it's not a bad idea to throw a small plastic bag over the line end as well. Can zip tie or rubber band on. Just incase it still seeps and drips some. (I store cars up on a lift with other vehicles parked beneath. Nothing worse than dripping brake fluid)! Cooper |
