Straight cat bypass vs premuffler?

Is there really much of a sound difference between a straight cat bypass pipe and a premuffler? Do the premuffler's in general have some baffling in them?

I have a cheapo Bursch straight pipe connected to a stock muffler modified with a second outlet. I like the sound but will probably replace the muffler with an M&K single in / two out.

I've had both and I think the pre muffler will give a more mellow increased sound compared the a raspy bark with the straight cat delete.

Absolutely a big difference. The pre-muffler indeed muffles the sound vs a straight pipe. The Fabspeed straight pipe I have is insanely loud. The pre-muffler is vastly more quiet (current setup is premuffler and Supercup exhaust--sounds incredible)

Yeah I've seen the other threads but was curious if the premuffler itself gave a more throaty sound or not.

my understanding is it [the pre-muffler] gives a more 'pleasing' sound, albeit it a bit quieter. i haven't run a straight pipe, mainly due to the responses here about how it sounded. you can get enough sound from a pre-muffler and an aggressive muffler or a complete muffler bypass - which is loud. i have tried that.

Thanks for this info. I was planning a cat bypass but wasn't very sure about it. As of now, I may simply upgrade the stock muffler and leave the cat alone.
