So how did your 911 surprise you today?

As I am quickly finding out by our new to us 78 SC, each week and or day brings me joy and pain. Driving it everyday is waking up aches and pains that this little pony has.

So my question to the forum is as follows:
What are the things that "surprised" you today?

I'll kick it off by sharing what I discovered this morning getting ready to run some errands. Needless to say I took another car.

This is the only Porsche I've had a chance to drive on a semi regular basis, so I wouldn't know any different on its handling. Anyway, walked out and one look at my front end and I knew something was amiss.

My steering wheel orientation.

My r/front wheel orientation that corresponds with my steering wheel.

L/front wheel orientation(rutrow) that doesn't correspond

Common malady known as looseboltitus. Only known cure is laying under one's car and putting a wrench/socket etc on every fastener that can be reached. Especially steering and brakes.

Mine surprised me by rolling over 90K despite never having a pulled head stud (yet). Driving it 40 miles daily.

Pulling into my driveway yesterday afternoon, my car developed a screeching like a failing throw out bearing. While mentally preparing a "while you're in there" thread, I realized the screeching was my neighbor's tractor mowing nearby. Laughing at myself, I remembered older cars makes you hyper-aware of noises. Too aware!!!

Mine screamed from 4000 RPM's to 6000 RPM's from 4th to 5th, windows down and sunroof open, and since my speedometer doesn't work, I have no idea how fast I was going, but it was fun, and surprising!

Here is my little joy........

Put key in ignition, turn, fuel pump clicking, starter not turning (battery is fully charged).
Turn off.....
turn on again, fuel pump clicking, no start.....
Do this 'turn on, turn off' a few more times.
For no reason, Starter turns, car starts, drive off.....

Later that evening, turn ignition key, car starts right away. Drive off.

This happens occasionally (once every 30 or so times). Ignition issue? Started issue? Ground issue? ??????

Jim, I wish someone would chime in on this unknown gremlin. I think it may be part of the starter switch that may need to be replaced. I have friends that this happened to and I have also experienced it lately.

Yea, there is no rhyme or reason when, why it happens. But, Since this is my daily driver, I have to deal with it until I can find a few days off to fully track down the problem(s).

I too have experienced the random no start issues Jim. It happens very seldom. Thus far I've just accepted it as part of having an old car.

The starter gets a dead spot inside the motor. Quick check next time it happens is to bump start it. If you can get it rolling, pop the clutch while in first. Should start right up. If so, you need a new starter.

BTW you can bump start going backwards, provided the transmission is in reverse.

There is a thread on this problem. Sorry I can't find it right now. I also have this problem my solution was to run a starter button from the battery too the starter. With ignition key turned on I press button to start car. My problem is the ignition switch is not sending the power to the starter.

How did it surprise me? Well just by being so thrilling and fun to drive. the new high end CDI really makes it run so well. Makes up for the final gaps in the MFI being too rich in a few places.

I like my new clock/volt/oil temp gauge and the AFR gauge built into the old clock opening:

What could be better than an empty Mulholland highway early on a Saturday AM.

The 70 surprised me by allowing me to reinstall the carbs without skinning a knuckle or dropping so much as a washer much less a tool. I'm amazed.

My cousin and I went for a drive and after having coffee, we decided to part ways. When I was about to pass his 87, I gave the usual beep and wave and guess what? The horn acted up and wouldn't stop, lol. I pulled over as I passed him with the horn balsting away until I pulled over to the shoulder. It took me a good 2 long minutes which felt like forever in this kind of situation before what for ever reason the horn stopped. Whew! I took off the steering wheel and found a splintered wire. Wrapped it with electric tape and back to regular programming..I guess I was not the only one surprised on that busy street...lol
