Lightbulb Just moved to lower elevation, what do I need to adjust on 81 911SC?

Ive gotten a few preliminary answers, but I need to know for sure as Im about to tackle this myself tonight.

Just moved from Denver (5280ft) to Sacramento (30ft). 81 911SC 3.0. Its definitely running lean cuz ive noticed the temp gauge going a bit higher than normal and a lot of backfiring on decel.

Ive got the 101 projects book and see the "adjusting the CIS" section. Anything else I need to do besides adjust that screw on the adjuster? Theres an emissions test center down the street I may be able to bribe to give a quick test, but what would I have tested? and what are acceptable numbers?

Thanks!

Oh yeah you need to fatten it up.
I do not have to pass emissions with my '83 and it runs best at an AFR of 13-13.5 and still gets good fuel economy. Some run fatter but she'll bog/die when cold at my elevation.
I live at 2600 ft. in the Bradshaw Foothills NW of Phoenix.
Check it when fully warmed up and don't wait too long...the exploding airbox likes that over lean scenario.

If you've moved to Ca., legally you need to register the car within 10 days and that will require a smog test in which enrichment might cause failure unless it was done with a gas analyzer and set according to factory specs. Now, if you plan to avoid that inevitable smog check until your current Colorado registration expires, no one here is going to tell, but it is a hefty fine/penalty if you're caught with out of state registration after establishing long term residence. It might be best to go to a quality Porsche shop and have them set your mixture, using their own equipment and knowledge of smog test specs.

The official test station may be able to give you the information on what is checked and, maybe, even the parameters for your particular car, but it's unlikely they will perform an "off the books" test as their equipment is linked directly to the state computers to avoid just such tactics, and there is a penalty for them if they are caught. Maybe just run it through, get the results, and go from there. The down side to that is, if you fail, the car is now "in the system" and the clock will be ticking down to your requirement to get registered in Ca. Still, there is no harm in asking for an unofficial measurement.

10 days! that's insane, I just renewed my C registration too. Unfortunately I called my new local Porsche shop and told them the scenario and they said itll take a few hours and $300! From everything Im reading, it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Either I completely misinformed him, or their client base is full of millionaires and I have no business going there anyway.

We miss ya already R! Yeah, I can't imagine it even taking 30 minutes. I lean my car out for emissions, then fatten it up in the parking lot every year. Takes about 5 minutes, including get out and back into the driver's seat.

If they're using an exhaust gas analyzer to measure out put of spent/unspent fuel, then that could take 10 minutes to set up.

Chris at Simple Auto wouldn't even charge you for it!

Craig, how much do you turn the screw when you adjust? I did probably a 1/4 turn on it and the backfiring is gone today. Idles up to 1000 but car feels good. Im on the new shop hunt as we speak., hopefully this works for now
