Engine lid shocks. 2 on same side? What was OEM config?
![]() ![]() I think the PO moved both struts to the left side when he installed the large K&N cone filter intake on the right side. But, installing both on the left side pushes the left side engine lid corner slightly ajar when latched closed. I removed one of them and the lid no longer flies open violently, and the seam gap has decreased considerably. I have since reinstalled the stock airbox. So, I thought I'd move the 2nd one back to the right side. But, I could not find mounting holes on the passenger side deck lid hinge. What is the stock OEM configuration? ![]()

I just did this yesterday to support my whaletail. Both are on the same side. Didn't notice a problem when the lid is closed.

Ok, so cars with no tail had one strut, and cars with a tail had two?

It takes 2 struts to lift a turbo tail as they are heavy. The OEM Turbo (930) tail has a strut on both right and left sides. If putting an aftermarket turbo tail on a non-turbo 911 then an extra strut is added to the left side as the right side hinge will have no provision for a strut. This imbalance often causes the deck lid to pull up on the left side causing a larger gap than on the right side. The cure is to drill the right hand hinge and add the 2nd strut which will even out the lift.

Two on one side is not OEM but a dealer fix when they add a tail as an option, if at the factory install, they would have installed one on each side by installing a turbo lid arm to accommodate the 2nd strut.
This was my fix when I could not align my lid correctly with a tail.

If you do a search in this forum you will find some pictures of some nice homemade brackets that people have added to the right hinge for the right side strut. Turbo cars had a different right hinge to accommodate the second strut, but all cars after a certain point had the bracket on the firewall for the forward attachment of the right hand strut, so all you have to do is fabricate a way to attach the strut to the right hinge.

My car has an OEM whale tail.
For now, I removed one strut, and the engine lid still stays up unassisted. Yes, my car does have that empty bracket on the firewall, but nothing on the hinge. You can see it in the 3rd photo peeking above the horizontal hose. I'll search the archives to see how to mount the 2nd strut on the right side with a bracket.

The two stuts were likely added on for additional lifting strength. I did this too and have been very unhappy with the results because it doesn't align the hood properly when closed. OEM used 1 strut on the left side for 911's. Turbo's were given two struts (1 left, 1 right) to lift the heavier hood. If you have added a whale tail or duck tail, I'd suggest taking it to a shop and having a 930 strut mount added to the right side. If you have just a regular lid, stick with 1 strut and avoid problems caused by the dual strut method.

We just installed a turbo tail on my buddy's 3.2, we took a template of my turbo hinge and welded a triangled bracket on the arm and it worked perfectly.
+1 for a standard Carrera lid without a tail, stick with one strut on the driver side.

No, I left just the one strut on the drivers side. It works, and the lid is much better aligned. Welding or fabricating a new hinge or bracket for the passenger side is far beyond my pay grade. If something bolted in, I'd consider it
