89 Carrera Evap Blower Burned Up

Fortunately it didn't catch on fire, but it smelled like someone made a campfire under the hood and put some nice smoke through the center dash vents. Fortunately I was just a few blocks from home when it went.

I have a new fan all ready to go in, and got the top of the evap box off and the old fan out and gone. I cleaned every inch of the car to get that campfire smell out, deodorized the vents, and everything smells great now, except for the top of the evap box. It's been 2 weeks, and I have cleaned that thing countless times with soap and water, and with vinegar. I've filled it with charcoal briquettes and left it for a week. It still has that acrid smoke smell to it, and I don't want to reinstall it until I can get that smell out. I know it took the brunt of it all, but man...

Any advice on getting the smell out of the evap box top from those that have been here before? I'd love to finally get the car put back together this weekend (I'm also doing the headlight relay update and fusing the dash lights).

Or...

Anyone have an '87-'89 evap box top for sale? I didn't see anything in the classifieds, and they seem to be hard to come by. Not really interested in backdating, but if anyone has a pre-'87 box top available, I can always return the fan I bought and get a Hurricane.

Thanks!

Michael

Install one of these available from our host.

Fusing was not Porsche's finest hour for the 3.2 and prior cars.

Have a look at my previous post-Added fuses and relays.

Good luck on your box top.

Gerry

Thanks Gerry. I actually have a factory-installed one on my '89 in the smuggler's box. The fuse blew when the motor went.

Thanks Gerry. My '89 actually has that fuse installed from the factory. The fuse blew when the fan went out.

Is it just the lid? Wouldn't the smoke go in the evaporator itself and the hoses that go into the dash.

I had to get smoke out of a microwave once and I boiled a cut lemon in water and used the water to wash the surfaces and it cured the situation.

Evap box.

I think that there might be two sizes.

M/Y 84-85

M/Y 86-89

I think the evaporator box top changed in 1985. I have a 1986 and had to use an earlier 911 evaporator box top when I fitted the Wirbelsturm (Hurricane) Blower Motor..

As a result I have a 1986 evaporator box top with a very new Bosch bower motor (less than 5000 miles) installed in it.

Let me know if you want it.

Place one of these near the A/C airflow inlet.

Thanks db_cooper. I couldn't remember what year they changed over but I think you are correct about '86 being the new style that I need.

I'm definitely interested in the top and motor. Sent you a PM.
