1000 miles after rebuild, retorque heads needed or not????

Hello,

The previous owner had the engine rebuilt about 1000+ miles ago. Shop who did the rebuild (non-porsche shop - just older European cars) said that heads would need to be re-torqued along with valve adjusted 1000 miles after rebuild. Local Porsche shop says re-torquing not required. A recent comment here on Pelican said re-torquing is required. So I am confused. Valve adjustment has been scheduled. Car is a 2.7 911.

Thanks

A re-torque on a repaired 2.7L is definitely something my shop always did at between 800 and 1200 miles. Oil & filter change, valve adjustment, and re-torque were all part of what I required to maintain the "Red Line Warranty." It would help to know if the repair shop used case savers, helicoils or Timeserts to secure the head studs, and also if Dilavar studs, steel studs or some type of after market studs were used. You can never have too much info, especially regarding a 2.7L repair!

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Casesavers. Studs I do not know. See attached pics/scans.

I have a 3.2, not a 2.7, but my shop said the same thing as your's and Peter. He was very adamant about it.

Because the engine is a '76, it did not have Dilavar head studs from new. Case savers are the best thread repair solution, and the technician probably re-installed the original steel studs. A re-torque should be done, and it only takes a few minutes to do with the rocker covers removed for the valve adjustment.

Thanks for posting the work and parts write-up. These guys seem to know what they are doing. Betcha they have a 911 gear head in there.

Yes - Perform the procedures. I can't think of any reason given the list of new parts (including chains, sealing rings, studs, etc.) that would be expected to break in a wee bit over the 1,000 miles. If heads were done more break in "movement". If rockers were ground and sleeved, same.

Were the heads done elsewhere? Sent off.

Just to be clear, the shop that did the machine work (top invoice) and the shop that did the actual engine rebuild (bottom parts list) are NOT the same.

The top invoice has no shop name, but the shop owner where the rebuild was done said the case work was done in CA, took 6 months, some guy named Walt at a Company called Competition Engineering. I hope it was CE, because I think they are well known with a very good reputation.

Oh, and the rebuild parts list is not the final list of parts, the final list is one and one half pages long and totaled $4190(Canadian).

Hope this is clear.
