Stolen!!!
Just heard about the theft of a '71 T Targa vintage racer belonging to one of my customers. The car is red with number 787 in yellow and was in a white 24' Haulmark enclosed trailer. Don't know the exact date it was stolen in Albuquerque New Mexico but it was approximately 2-3 weeks ago.
I spent hundreds of hours and lots of the owners money getting the car from mid-pack to a consistent front runner. Feels like a death in the family to me and I can't imagine what it feels like to my friend Bob. Once I find some pics and get the VIN I will post them. Also trying to find a record of the engine number. The engine is a 2.4 (7R case I think) running PMO carbs and a exhaust from George's European Racing Headers. Trans-ax has close ratio gears, LSD and a bad 1st gear. Other notables include a full cage, glass rear window deleted, MSD mounted in the back seat pan and a rather crude fuel cell mounted upright in the deleted spare tire/fuel tank area (I never liked that set-up). The trailer is probably long gone but I have a hunch the car may still be out there somewhere and there is a $10k bounty for its return. Please spread the word and keep your eyes open. Thanks, Greg Hilyer 505-553-1734 Or contact the Albuquerque Police Department |

The thing is that the p***k who stole the trailer and car is not likely to go racing with the car, so what can he do with it? Part it out, maybe, or sell it to someone who will do that- most likely this second option I think. Sucks. However, miracles do happen, so maybe it will show up next week, in perfect condition. Let's hope.

Since it seems it was stolen by accident then they probably don't know what they have and since the Porsche community is tight like it is I would believe that at the very least the dirt bags will get busted if they even try to sell it or the parts. These kind of cars and or its parts don't just show up that often do they?

Unless the car was promptly shipped overseas, I suspect it is out there somewhere and may eventually be recovered (in whatever condition). The trailer is probably already in Mexico but a Porsche with no paperwork likely wouldn't make it over the boarder even if they were stupid enough to try.
On the other hand it is not that uncommon for old race cars to change hands without a title. I just hope that some unsuspecting buyer doesn't pay good money just to find out it's a stolen car and be out all his money. Beware! And please do spread the word. Greg |

^^This.. I know of three race cars that were stolen here locally and all three turned up sooner or later. Granted, one of them was 4 years later, but it was untouched. They were all recognized by fellow P- enthusiasts. Simply can't sell these things in one piece without someone noticing. Most crooks wont go through the hassle of trying to part them out. The police told us that the majority of these thefts are people trying to steal the trailer. They dont care about what is in it.
