Steering Shaft (U-Joint) Question

1980 SC. I have the updated sleve installed at the wheel end of the column (about 4 years ago). I've never had a steering issue or slop in the wheel since then, but yesterday I hopped in the car and instantly noticed upon pulling out of a parking space that my shaft was squeeking in the column and the steering wheel was stiff - as if it was dragging on something. I turned it lock to lock and thumped the wheel a few times with my hand and ran over a few speed bumps at about 15 mph to see if it would settle back into a happy groove but it stayed stiff all the way home (11 miles). I opened up the smugglers box and shot some WD-40 on the universal joint and waited about 30 minutes then took the car out again. Problem solved - seemingly. Still fine today.

I know that WD-40 is not a lubricant that will hold up, but I'm wondering if what I experienced is an indication of wear that leads to failure. Is this a maintenance item? Should I be lubing the joint with light oil from time to time? Or is it just worn and in need of replacement?

I had slop on both of my U-joints and replaced them with a known good used ones. Once they joint slop they are done. I tried some VW joints but they were to weak to handle the 911's linkage.

OK. Thanks. I'll see about sourcing some replacements. It looks like a pretty straightforward job. Anything tricky about it? Like total column removal? Seems to me like it's tension nuts on collars pinching a spline.

I do not mean to step on toes but I happen to be looking for the upper one under the formed cover behind the gauges. Wouldn't mind doing both.
If the OP does not want the joints, I will take them assuming they fit 77!
