ypur looking at 20-25K (ish depending on how far you go) it may be easer to sell your current car, take the money you would have invested into this car and buy a new one.

your car looks like a great set-up for track, some people would reaqlly enjoy it!

just a thought.

We started with the same rear wing, so your will likely look just as good when done!

Thanks for the compliment.

(mine has stickers because people are more forgiving and tolerant of cars that are not pristine, perfect and original if they are seen as track cars) ;)

To repay you for that compliment, here is another guy's car. A rough facsimile of what yours could look like by just doing paint without any backdating.

P.S.
If you found an original street car it would likely need a new latch panel to replace the rusty one anyway. Thats another reason why I like saving old track cars instead.

Edit to add a picture of mine for comparison.
Is backdating better, or just different?

I'm telling you - just a coat of shiny black paint!

PS ignore those who would believe this car is not worth reverting to original. Good restorations of long nose cars are worth stupid money right now - and 72s are particularly desirable. You could make Wayne a whole lot richer and still not be investing in a loser. Just my 2c. Do you know what the car started out as? IE 911T, 911E or 911S?

Also do you have the engine number it will allow people smarter than me to figure out whether it was original to the car.

I disagree that it would take anywhere close to $25K to make a cool RSR look car if your handy and can do a lot of the work yourself and source some of the stuff used. It sounds like you are handy. $4k for paint and a couple of grand for panels and small stuff and some hours in the garage you will have a neat car. It will not be a super high quality build but thats OK!

What is up with those rear wheels they look like some one took D90s and had them made into 3 piece rims. Big bucks on a not super desirable rim.

Amstaff 08-06-2014 03:43 PM

Eric, that's exactly what they are D90s converted into three piece rims. Personally I think they are hideous but that's what came with the car. At some point I will have to purchase some sweet rims for it.

wayner 08-06-2014 05:10 PM

3 piece rims?

Why not have Jeff Alton build those up with some new centres?

Attached are pics of a car from the Early S registry. It's a 72E that was updated in the 70's to look like a 930. Instead of going through the effort to totally restore it, it was cheaper to build a nice wide body hot rod. I think it came out great.

More info here.

It's your car do what makes you happy with it :).

I bought a 66 911 ten years ago when nobody wanted SWB cars. It had been done as an IROC and I drove it for a couple years. I started working on it 5 yrs ago to bring it back to something a little closed to what it started out as, but to me better than it was. I did not want a skinny tired narrow body car. I did not know the value would sky rocket so a car I never thought would be worth the money I put in to it might now be worth more than I ever imagined it could be, but so what,... other than costing me more for parts I did not build it for the money I'm building what I want.

Started with this

Heres where I'm at now

2 new front fenders from factory 1500.00 each 1 month to get
bumpers front 150.00 rear 200.00
rear lid 750.00
front lid 300.00
2 new rear qrts from factory 1800.00 each 10 months to get
rockers inner outers 250.00 each
new front nose panel 200.00
unknown # of hours welding

And YES I cut the brand new rear qrts and put SC flares on the to keep my 9" rear wheels.

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!

bakdating with an attitude... is what I say when I describe my vision.
that means: a long hood style with edge-rounded sc fenders for the 7/8x16
the look ist somewhat "loud" but not "screaming", just perfect!

Amstaff 08-08-2014 04:10 PM

Wheels

I am not a wheel expert so here is a pix of the rear wheel. Is it a 3 piece? It has 29 bolts in it, one is missing to make room for the valve stem.
Fronts are 245/50 ZR 16 Rears are 245/45 ZR17

Amstaff, widebody longhoods are whats hot right now, has been for a while. Race cars are hot in the collectors market too. Paint your car in martini racing colors, change the wheels, save thousands of dollars and drive it. But its your car and maybe restoring it to original is what you want. Oh wait, what was the question? Oh yea you can do that. Good luck and enjoy.

holy crap!! that has to be one of the worst looking 911s i've ever seen. backdating that will be the best thing possible for that car. no matter where you end up, it will be a vast improvement. good luck and keep posting on your progress [of saving that poor car].
