Clutch effort - 915 vs G50

At our local cars and coffee, I swapped my 86 that has the 915 transmission and a cable operated clutch with my buddies 88 that has the G50 and a hydraulic clutch. I hadn't experienced the new generation syncros. First thing we noticed was how much more effort his G50 clutch had. Not sure if his clutch is stock, mine is, also has a new cable. Is this higher effort for the G50 clutch normal? Thanks

I have driven several 915 cars and two G50 cars.
I have owned two 915 cars. The first a 79 SC had a very heavy clutch pedal and I assumed they were all like that. This was before I discovered Pelican. After selling it the buyer put in a new clutch and cable and reported a big improvement.
The second which I own now had a heavy clutch when I bought it , but a new omega spring, small arm and new cable makes for a very light pedal.
The first G50 was a test drive in the UK with a very heavy pedal the second here in OZ was a mates low milage 964 C4 had a very light pedal.
My point is that either if well maintained will have a light pedal.
My other impression between the two is the G50 had a shorter throw and seemed more accurate.
I have read in here that the vagueness in the 915 selection can be hugely improved with all new bushings. That is my next project!

Cheers
Bill

If you have a new Pressure Plate, it will feel much lighter. My old 915 Pressure Plate will feel much heavier than the G50 hydraulic.

I have a 915 and have driven a few others. Also I have driven a few G50's. The clutch is far more progressive in a G50 whereas the 915 seems to be engaged or not engaged with very little in between. In terms of effort I can't really say I've noticed a measurable difference. Cheers

If the G50 hasn't had the release shaft update (and even with it) the shaft can get a buildup of clutch dust that makes the effort very high. When cleaned and lubed, I find the G50 clutch effort 'medium' and silky smooth. But every 50k miles or so I find the fork/shaft needs to be cleaned up to keep it that way.

Thanks to all for your helpful responses. Yes, I saw the update bulletin in the Bentley service manual so time to check the serial number. With that much difference in effort, something is not right and needs attending.
