Smoking Engine

Just got my beloved 1982 911sc back after an oil change thought it never went so well. Everything was fine for about 5 miles Then as I pulled off great clouds of blue smoke. When I remove the oil filler cap the engine cuts out after a few seconds. On further examination I found oil in the air filter box.I asked the garage and they told me they put 10 ltrs of oil in as per hand book. The car starts instantly as usual and dosn.t smoke much until I accelerate then It back fires a little and belches smoke Any advice appreciated:

Sounds like they overfilled it.

Was this a garage that knows 911s?

That would be my guess as well.

Thanks for replies both tank and sump were emptied. How would the oil end up in the air filter box?

They lied to you too!!!

When I had some paint work done many years ago, the brain trust put in 4 quarts of oil because the oil light flashed when the e-brake was up on my long hood. Too much oil goes into the air box thru the sump vent. Drain from the engine bottom plug and get about 2 quarts at a time out because it is not the flood of oil from the dry sump tank. Get some gloves and clean the air box as best possible. If you need one, I have a new Mann air filter or 2 for cheap because I switched to K&N a while back. I did a 73 911 service at the local gas station back in the day and we (local bubbas) had the common sense to warm it up & then top off the sump. Following the instructions is difficult for people sometimes. Best of luck.

If over filled the crankcase breather hose will push a lot of oil vapor and oil up into the top of the oil tank where it gets sucked into the hose going to the air intake boot, and from there through the throttle body into the air box.
Venturi effect.

I have drained a couple of qts of oil out and cleaned around the air filter box and its still smoking How long should I run it for to see if it clears? I still have the problem of when I take the oil filler cap off the engine fads and stops till I replace it. When I do that it starts again immediately. I really appreciate your thoughts and comments

I saw your PM, but I'd rather you keep the thread going with your troubles posted for others to read about.
Take the car out for a good high rpm run at highway speed for an hour or so and it should clear out the residual oil. (Italian tune up)
The car stalling when you remove the oil cap may clear up as well.
If not, you may need to hook up a fuel gauge and CO meter and a timing light to ensure everything is in spec.
Maybe even clean or change the plugs.

How much oil?

As Timmy said it may take some time to work the oil out of the intake system. What does your dip stick read when warmed up is the question? However on a positive note, a little smoke will keep the mosquitoes away and you did not pay MM $15K for the smoke.

Not sure who the "they" is or are.
But a basic oil change and valve adjust when required is best done by those that really care ( the owner)
Your P car should not ever never go to a quikie shop. (if thats what happened)
"They" will not put in the correct oil .
"they" would have no clue if you asked a zink and boron PPM.
"They" will not have the correct oil filter.

Just taken the 911 for a thrash and the smoke has cleared and the engine dosn't stall any more when I remove the oil filler cap but it still slows down the tick over speed also I have noticed a change in the running temperature Before it always ran on the cool side but now the gauge reading is just below the middle mark any ideas. Many thanks for advice so far

The RPMs should drop when you loosen the oil filler cap. That's normal.

What viscosity oil was in the car before the change? What viscosity oil was added?
Thicker oils can raise temps slightly (I think).

Drain out oil till you have it near the lower mark on the oil filler stick. I always check oil after the car is fully warm and at idle. I tend to keep my oil level at the lower to 1/2 area on the filler stick.
