I'm going to the Porsche Museum!

Leaving July 23rd for a visit to Germany and my wonderful wife has planned a tour of the Porsche Museum on July 26th. (I know I'm a lucky guy)

Other than DON'T FORGET THE CAMERA!!! Got any other advice? Maybe get a key cut or buy a hat? I just don't know what to expect.

I was there probably ten years ago. It was only a small space compared to what you will see. They did have a nice little store there, so I did some shopping. Probably too late to arrange a factory tour, but it never hurts to inquire. Enjoy, and don't forget to post photos upon your return.

Good on you (and especially your wife) for planning a trip to Porsche Museum! I would definitely also plan on a trip to the Mercedes museum, which is relatively nearby. It is also a wonderful museum and presents its vehicles in a more historical context than the Porsche museum. Both are world-class and you should try to get to both.

The family and I went last year, Do not go on a Monday, Ask me how I know, We went there on a Monday and Closed. I looked over and seen Patrick Dempsey, I said to the wife and she screamed his name, He came over and talked to us and said he was filming for Velocity channel 24 Lemans. He asked if we would like a private tour of the museum. Hell Yeah. We were all surprised.
Patrick Dempsey is one of the most down to earth guy and super nice.
I hope you have an experience like that also.

I agree wholeheartedly. Patrick Dempsey is a great guy, driver, and actor. He was at Hockenheim this past weekend. Check out Porsche classic too.

walk through each level of the museum parking lot, I saw a nice Carrera GT and some others.
dont bring a camera for the factory (museum ok)-they take that very seriously and confiscate before tour.
Gift shop and gift shop options at dealer across street are kind of sparse unless you want a mini boxster or 996.

have fun

Definitely walk around the parking garage. It may also be worthwhile to walk around the back of the building by the train tracks. We did that and found a 956 and a Manthey 24h Nurbugring winner sitting there (sadly behind fencing, still cool to see). At ground level before going up the escalators, you'll be able to see through glass into the workshop. There are always interesting things to see (behind glass, but still...)

Pay attention to the display area in the middle of the second floor near the elevator. They sometimes bring out a car or two and rev the engine for giggles. They ran an old 993 supercup racecar when I was there. Cool to hear and it drew attention which was great for getting people out of my photos. :-)

The gift shop is small, but has some interesting stuff. My memory was that the die-casts were reasonably priced. I got a 911GT3 with "Porsche Museum" script on it as a souvenir. The dealership across the street is worth a quick walk through, but don't expect much.

Have a great time and enjoy the visit, but the Mercedes museum is an absolute mandatory visit if you can make that happen. We've done Porsche (old & new), BMW (Munich), Audi (Ingolstadt) and MBZ and found that MBZ was the best of the bunch.

Also keep an eye out for mules and prototypes. We've never managed to get any decent photos, but have seen a few cars in camouflage around Stuttgart.

Have a great trip!

Make sure you visit the gift shop... and your C.C. has lots of room! DVDs and ties and other neat stuff but it is not cheap!

I visited the museum in 1989 and took a bunch of pictures that once in a blue moon I look at. The real keep sake was a scale model (one size larger than a Hot Wheel) of the Porsche Carrera Circa late 80's. Definitely not cheap, but heck, it is stamped NZG Modelle Made in Federal Republic of Germany. It sat on a prominent spot on my desk at work until I retired and now it sits with a collection of other Porsche models in my computer room at home.

I believe you will enjoy your trip to MECCA.

Found some of my photos from 2012:

The workshop -

Cars sitting behind the museum (I forgot about the 911 GT1-98!) -

Garage (poor photo, but gives you an idea) -

Not my photo, but another garage shot -

Rolling out the 993 -

Crowd gathered around the 993 engine revving -

You're going to have an awesome visit - get there early to avoid the crowds!!

I'm actually on a work detail in Stuttgart for the next several months (working for another car company )! As some of the others have said, do not go on a Monday, it is closed! Throughout this month they are having the Le Mans exhibition, so they have alot of the 917s out etc!

I would recommend staying within downtown Stuttgart. I'm not very familiar with the hotels, but there's not much going on in the surrounding areas, and if you take the subway it's only a 15 minute trip to the Porsche and Mercedes museums.

They have some pretty cool miniature replicas of several cars, so I got one that was similar to my car

Let me know if you'd like to grab a beer while you're out here!

I was there exactly a week ago. As the others have already mentioned: Do take a stroll around the building and in the parking lot. There's lots of interesting things do see.

Since the museum has a Le Mans theme at the moment, they had to make room for all those 906s, 908s, 917s etc. So the there's no 911R in sight and you can only see their 911 RS through the workshop windows.

The museum opens at 9, and the museum shop at 10. There's also a shop across the street, where you can buy hideously expensive 10w60 oil, if you still have 1,200 kilometres to go, and your old beat-up 2.7 already guzzled 8 litres the last 4,000 kms.

Have fun!

Holger

We have always stayed at the Hotel Stuttgart, Zuffenhausen which is a nice hotel, lots of parking, and a 10 minute walk to the factory.

Try to get access to the shop located downstairs at the museum.

Have a great trip,

Gerry

Check dates and times.

I have been to Stuttgart twice, day trips from work.
Arrived once on a Monday. Closed.
Then several years ago I was in Germany again and beat feet down to the museum, family in tow. Closed again, this time for a week for Christmas holidays.
I have yet to get past the door!!

I was there three weeks ago. It may be too late, but try to take the factory tour. It needs to be arranged directly with the folks in Stuttgart - PM me for a contact. I made my reservations 6 months in advance, and was on a tour with an English speaking guide and about 20 guests. Saw the engine workshop and 911/Boxster assembly areas - awesome!

I left my family in Paris and made the trip solo, so I stayed in a really simple ACHAT hotel that was maybe 300 yards up the road from the museum. There is not much near the factory/museum - If you are with your wife staying in the City Centre would be nicer.

Have fun.

Good advice above. If you find a quite time and you are nice you can ask to sit in some of the cars and they may start some for you too.

You can also go to MB's museum in the same day, its an excellent experience also, though not as personal.
