Question on Proper application of gasket goop on exhaust

When I installed my heat exchangers, I used high-temp gasket goop. I applied to both sides of the gasket and let sit for 10 minutes before installing.

I later had an issue and had to remove one of the heat exchangers (before starting engine), and I was surprised how easy it was to remove the gaskets. Now I'm wondering if I applied the goop incorrectly. Should I be adding this to the gasket or the manifold/heat exchangers. I'm trying to insure that I have absolutely no leaks.

Any advice would be appreciated. This is something I can easily fix now before my first startup.

Thanks!

Just put SSI's on this spring. Dry gaskets, no leaks.

I'm not sure I agree. The Carrera gaskets are for 42mm ports I.D. My 2.7 has 38mm ports.

This application calls for some long-life preservative/coating for threads and threaded fasteners. Not sure whether Never-Seez, Dow 111 or other is the best for long term corrosion protection. If you ever tried to remove decades old heat exchangers, you know what I mean.

Comments?

Sherwood, if you only knew... Ok, here's what happened, I just pulled the engine for my PMO project and spent an entire month attempting to get the exhaust off. Of course part of that month was replacing the 5 broken studs and installing timeserts.

So, now that I'm putting it all back together.....I want it right and I don't want any leaks!

I have been fighting with an exhaust leak on my 69 - pinhole leak that causes backfire on decel. as near as I can figure, I have one exhaust port flange that isn't "true" so I may need to try some good (as much as it irks me to have to do it).
