turning the engine by hand

My car was totaled(front end) and cannot be started in the conventional manner(with starter). I purchased the totaled car from the insurance company and my car has been sitting for three years since the accident. How long can it sit before I should turn the engine to see if I can indeed turn it?

How should I proceed? I have an idea but just want to make sure. I don't want to damage it. (hopefully it's not already damaged).

I bought a crashed car and every three months or so I'd give the engine quarter of a turn. There is a nut about 17mm on the end of the crankshaft, holds the bottom pully on. I left a ring spanner on that.

If you had left the sparkplugs in the engine during the three years... you will have nothing to worry about! Our engines are air cooled, so we dont have leaking head gaskets to worry about or anything like that. If the intake is still intact, you are good. You may be able to turn the engine over just a tad bit with a wrench on the crank pulley bolt, but without pulling the plugs, it will be difficult to get the leverage needed to overcome the compression.

I think that turning it the wrong direction will do internal harm. To be sure, pull the distributer cap and see which one of the plugs will fire next (assuming you know the firing order) if you proceed either clockwise or counterclockwise. - has to do with the timing chains?
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

On my 912, I turn the engine with the nut at the generator. Very easy as a reduction is already built in. I'm new to the 911 scene, so I am not sure if the alternator will work.... and I've not had a reason to do that yet. You won't hurt anything by trying (if you can).
