Difference between wiring harnesses 69-71

I'm in the middle of a restoration of a '69 911 2.0E. The wiring harness in the car is completly useless because of an electrical fire. So i want to replace it. I got a brand new wiring harness for a '71 model. It looks identical at the first sight but as i go deeper i see there are many differences (maybe too many). So what do you think? Can i modify this wiring harness to fit for my car or should i get the correct harness?

I would look for the correct harness. Almost everything from at least the rear firewall back is different for everything except maybe the lights.

That is the answer i was afraid of. I purchased this harness on Ebay. They said it's built for the '69 model. But it's not. The company disappeared so now i have the wrong harness... Do you know a company who sells these harnesses?

I would compare the harness you just bought to a wiring diagram.

I think it makes more of a difference as to what model the harness if designed for. If you are going to use MFI you need to make sure the engine compartment harnesses are set up for your MFI.

If you are going to use Webers, then you won't want the "correct" engine harness anyway. Too many extra wires hanging around.

The other concern would be what options you have on your car. Some options need their own wiring, like fog lights, sunroofs and rear window defoggers.

The 69 harness is unique as it has multiple connectors along the back of the firewall compared to all the years afterwards that run to the rear fuse panel.

How much of the harness is new?
Just the engine portion or the complete car?
PM or email me and I can help figure it out or even build you something.

I started to modify the new harness to fit to my '69 2.0E. It's not impossible, but NEVER do it without electrical and soldering knowledge!

The only problem is that i didn't take pictures of the wires running in the car, so now i don't know where they originally run. Can somebody help me out with some pics?

I would allow T2 to make you a new one or at the very least a partial one. Another fire could wipe out the car totally, he knows what he is doing. I bet if you sent him the one you have he could probably work with it and give you a discount. Electrical problems are no fun.

I hate it when online businesses put "call for pricing". Why not just post the price?

Kroon does nice work.
They normally need your old harness to reuse some of the connectors that are NLA.
Someone in Europe told me the price quoted for his '72 was about $3600 + shipping and an additional VAT of 20%.

Kroon quoted me 890 EUR for the front harness, that's everything from the fuse boxes to the front firewall and 380 EUR for the front to rear harness that runs through the tunnel.

How much of the wiring harness do you need? Where was the fire that ruined the harness...?

The reason I ask is that there is not one complete harness that runs through the car there is a portion from the fuse box that controls all the front lights etc.. there is the section the serves the center... etc...

I have a front wiring harness from a 69T can provide VIN for the chassis it was removed from ,would be willing to send it to you for whatever you think is a reasonable price + shipping from NYC Metro area.

Of course I can shoot some photos, also any jacketing on the harness got extremely brittle and is gone, the conductors are very pliable with the factory tinned ends...

Sounds about right for those 2 harnesses. There are 7 or so separate harnesses for the complete car. Add the engine harnesses, the 2 front and 2 rear lighting harnesses the license plate harness and more for other options like fog lights and it adds up fast.

I would charge a little less for the total price and definitely less for shipping if you are in the US. What is the conversion to USD from euros today?

Oh, these prices are really high. I did the whole job in 4 days. Ok, i had a new harness for another model, but i wish i didnt have it, because it was much more difficult to modify then build a new one. I think i could make the complete set for around 1000-1200 USD without the factory connectors of course.

Difference between wiring harnesses 69-71

There was a thread a while back where someone replaced their entire harness buying it from Porsche and it was a ridiculous amount. Something like $20,000 installed!

The parts to build them are not what costs a lot of money, it is the time and labor as these are very time consuming to build with factory connectors and wire coverings etc.

A lot of the connectors are NLA and I have to make them myself.

How long would it take you to build this?

It doesn't look difficult. The problem is that you need a sample to make an exact copy. I can only produce wire harness for '69 models becuase i had an original one.

Tomorrow i post some pictures of the harness i made (comparing to the original).

Difference between wiring harnesses 69-71

Where are you located?
I only ask because it sounds like you only value your time and skills at about $5 an hour. (Based on building an entire harness for a car for $1200)

Porsche charges about $1400 for a '77 engine harness similar to the one I posted a picture of earlier. Just the engine harness. Search Pelican, they may still show them as available.( link below )

It does look simple to follow a pattern if you have all the correct connectors and different gauge of wire with correct color striping and the rubber parts and vinyl tubing etc to put it together using correct crimping tools and methods.

You never answered my question though, how long would it take you to build such a simple thing?

I live in Hungary. I can't answer your question, becuase i'm not experienced in giving quotes on building harnesses. I'm an electrician, i have all the right tools to do it professionally (these harnesses made by techinques from the 60's, so it can be made by hand). Only the specific Porsche connectors are impossible to get. To answer your question to build a harness based on a sample takes a few days if i have all the connectors in hand.
