Transmission Problem: 5th and Reverse wont engage!
Hey guys, I just bought a 1975 porsche 911(stock transmission, 3.0 motor). The car drove good in gears 1-4 but wouldn't engage 5th and reverse. There was a sort of rattling noise in the transmission above about 15mph.
![]() I can move the shifter into 5th and Reverse but it feels like it wont engage. When I let the clutch out, its like its in neutral. When in reverse the car the car cannot be rolled backwards, it feels like its locked up. With the car jacked up and in 5th gear the wheels would spin but it would make a clicking noise. Here is a video of the noise: View My Video So then I decided to drop the motor/trans to see if I can figure out whats wrong. ![]() I drained the trans oil but didn't find any big chunks. ![]() The nose cover off of the transmission: ![]() I shifted the transmission into reverse and tried to spin the gear but it wouldn't move. View My Video I did notice some wear on some gears: ![]() ![]() ![]() And noticed that this nut wasn't all the way tightened down to the gear and had some play. Is this normal? ![]() I'm not sure what to do next. Any help will be greatly appreciated! |

I would have tried adjusting the linkage before removing the drive train. That's not to say you don't have some issues inside the tranny .........................

Typical for a blown or worn coupler bushing. Now that you're in the transmission, how to the shift forks look?

Did you ever get this resolved? My '86 trans started to grind going into 5th, and now it feels like 5th or Reverse won't engage.
