Very helpfull advice. The first time I checked- I got 14.3-14.4V even at 4000 rpm. An hour later, I started it, drove to the end of the alley and it died. Wouldn't start, but sounded a little different that when it quit in Colorado Springs. Finally started and w/coaxing started running fine, but tests 13 - 17.1V while revving engine with noticable brighteneing/dimming of the lights. Can the voltage regulator be replaced or should I just replace the whole alternator? I haven't had any time to check any sites lately, but I seem to remember reading that the alternator is quite burried and hard to get to. Should the battery which had been run with about 1/2 the correct water for a couple hundred miles, but is holding charge now, be changed?

The regulator can be replaced by itself. Whether the battery will survive more than a week is a coin toss. Probably not!

I think it may finally be fixed. Thanks so much to everyone who lent advise. Replaced the regulator, voltage readings don't break 13v. I would have been lost without this BBS, living in a small Colorado mountain town doesn't lend itself to competant Porsche repairmen. I came to learn a master Porsche & Mercedes tech that had lived here for years had moved to Wyoming just a week before I towed the car into my driveway.
