What is the normal oil temp range for my 66 911?
Hello Pelicans, I recently purchased a 66 911 with the intentions of returning it to original. It is a nice driver quality car with 113,000 miles, no A/C and with the normal issues a 48 year-old car is expected to have. (hope this isn't too vague?)
I took the car for a drive today, approximately 1.5 hours with avg speed around 70 km/hr. Temperature today was 28C (82 degrees), a few stops and hills and not much traffic. My oil temp gauge reads from 60-140 (image below) and the hottest it reached was 100, is this considered normal? Opinions appreciated. Mike ![]() |

Yes, 100 is good, it'll burn the water out of the oil....Anything up to 100-110 is fine if you have been driving it a bit... if you hit 120 and have not been pushing the car at all (or aren't stuck in a traffic jam on a hot day), then you have something to worry (a little) about. I worry more about the opposite side (pressure) !

Amazing...a 48 year old Porsche with accurate instruments..nothing else would come close to the durability/quality of Porsche, especially in 1966.. and 100*F oil temps are just fine.

As Bruce Anderson said: "240° F (115 C) is hot, 250° F (121 C) is too damn hot"
You are fine.

Here's my related question - is it normal to hear the oil gurgling/trickling through the pipes from inside the car when sitting at idle?

Sorry for the delay javadog, chassis number is 303565, does this help?
I have contacted PCNA and the customer service rep could not tell me after her check so she has forwarded my request on to another department. I need to know who to apply to for the COA. Apparently PCNA will only do cars sold to North America? Thanks, Mike |

I can't say for sure what it is. It's a very early '66, though.
The gauges are a mystery. If it had ROW gauges, I would have thought the oil level would be indicated in litres and I'd have expected a metric speedo. Have you cheked for any date codes on the gauges? JR |

I understand it is a second or third week January 66 build, it has the early 4 screw horn grills, I realize several original parts have been changed but perhaps the factory when building the early 66 cars just used leftover parts from the 65 bins? Thanks again for the help, Mike |

We are all waiting for some nice pictures of that car, as it sounds interesting.
If it is a '66 model and was built in January of '66, then it is not an early '66, but rather it was built half way though a normal production year. Unless, of course, the production year's time frame differed in '66.

The production cutoff for 1965 was JUNE of 1966. 1966 MY cars were produced from JULY of 1966 through December. #303565 was the 174th 911 built for the 1966 model year (#303391 being the first). Porsche produced 1709 911s for MY 1966. That's close to 285 per month. If they took vacation in 1966 as they do today, there could have been even more cars per month. This looks like a mid July car, 2nd or 3rd week, but it could be a little earlier if vacation has to be figured in.

Well, I'm old, I wear glasses, and the print in the specs book (p.n. 4203.20, pages 6 and 7) is pretty small. However, my glasses are my current prescription, the light is really good in this room, and I can see (and read) the print really well. Yes, I'm sure.

So you're telling me the elaborate information in the factory specs book, published by Porsche, is wrong? Please furnish evidence to support your statement.

Thank you Cap'n, the January date I referenced was information provided to me. I'm sure the more research I do it will become more clear but for now I appreciate all input, at least I know it's a 66.
What I'm still trying to determine is whether it's a North American or European model, I hope to have an answer shortly. If anyone can direct me to reliable data sources I would enjoy reading a good book, the challenge is that I've read various sources with differing information? Thanks, Mike |
