Drone, mufflers, SSIs, backdating heat - my head hurts.

This is the one that gets me. I'd love to get a Monty 2-in-1-out, but a Dansk or M&K might be just as good for what I'm doing, which is just a car for driving on the road (no track stuff) and want to be able to hear the purr of the motor sometimes, and not necessarily the growl or drone of exhaust. Put my foot down, make some noise. Easy around town? Nothing to attract the negative attention of the local LEOs. I'm going to attack this exhaust/heat backdate carefully, but the holdup right now is which muffler. I have read so much in the past few days that I can't keep it straight. There is WAY TMI on exhaust stuff in this forum! lol.

Maybe someone could make at least the 2-in-1-out muffler part a little simpler for me. The least important thing is how much extra power I can get out of the muffler. The most important thing is that it doesn't drone, at any RPM. A close second to that is a mellow sound the rest of the time. Anyone help out a guy who's in a state of info overload?

From what I know, the drone is more prevalent in the 2-outs... 1 out should be fine.

By the title I'm guessing you're running SSI's, I think M&K 2-in-1-out would be great without being abnoxious.

2-in-1-out mufflers do not drone. It's the resonance between twin exhausts that causes drone, so you'll be fine with a 2-in-1-out muffler.

M&K is great. You'll love it. I have a '78 and went with SSIs and a 74 muffler (2-in-1-out) and it sounded exactly as a 911 should sound. Not too loud, but definitely more character than it had before.

I'm kind of wishing my backdated ssi's, m&k 2 in 1 out and cat elimination (no need for it up here) was quieter!!!! Thought it was cool at first but quickly tired of it.

Not really...

My backdated was a SSIs with a MK 2in/2out. I love it and everybody behind me at the Porsche Monthly Coffee Run love it. My better half (and co-pilot at time) was not that thrilled

So,I got lucky coming across a never installed Dansk Sport PP for sale post at half price and got it. Pretty well the same without the drowning which I miss, keep in mind that my top is always down so I don't know was is the effect in a closed cabin.

Bty, the MK is not for sale because one day...

I have a 2 in 1 out that we cut in half and dame near gutted. I then added a second outlet. At 4k rpm or more, it screams in an awesome way. It does however drone at normal driving rpms. I keep a stock 2 in 1 out that I run when I need a break from the madness

One the other side of the coin ... I have a muffler delete and run a hollow cat most of the time and love the rasp that goes with it ... If I keep it under 4k its not that loud ... but at 6 it screams ...

My other half does not care for it ...

I'll be curious to hear more input on this. I'd like a bit more exhaust note than my stock banana as well. While I don't have SSIs, the rest of my wish list is pretty much the same as the OP. What I've gathered so far is that everyone's definition of noise level is wildly different. I'm having trouble deciding what to believe as far as reasonable noise level. Most people say that an M&K 1-out is reasonable, but some complain that they are a bit loud. I've yet to hear much "too loud" from owners of Dansk Sports, but I've yet to hear one in person. I've heard and driven a 3.2 w/cat and an M&K 1-in GT3 style - the exhaust note was glorious, but it was a bit too loud for my comfort level driving to work at 6:00 AM in my neighborhood.

perhaps you can try something like this before the muffler. Dynatech Vortex Insert Cones 772-32510 - SummitRacing.com The resonating comes from the sound waves in the pipes. if you break it up in the right place that should fix the drone I would think

Eric,
I have SSI's and a stainless grey primered Dansk 2/1 (Non Sport) and it has a nice sound.
(Actually, all the primer came off and it's now a stainless look!)
It's fairly quiet when putting around town, and sounds good all the way up into the 6000 rpm range with my foot in it.
Not loud, not quiet, no drone, I like it.
Here's a pic for you.
Finally, back in the game!

Has anybody tried the Vortex cones on a two out muffler with headers and reported no droning from that setup ?
I could live with my droning between 2-3 K rpms at the track with my helmet on ... not that i'm ever in that rpm range anyways, but on the occasional street drive it's quite brutal !

Cheers !

Wow, that looks nice. Two hours for an engine drop, huh? Certainly that's not your first drop, right?

I appreciate your (and everyone's) input on this. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

You're correct sir, it was my second one ever. Having a mid rise lift makes all the difference when you're doing it by yourself. Would have been faster but I had to drain the oil first!
Of course it really helps that the engine was out 9 months earlier to replace the head studs etc, and all the connections for hoses and the like were all new. No struggling with seized nuts and bolts etc.

Put SSIs and a Monty 2 in 1 out on yesterday.
Idle to 1500rpm a dirty burble , as they say a proper Porsche sound ;<) Above that all the familiar mechanical noises, no real increase in noise over the premuffler/Bischof that was on before. Noticed a little popping on the overrun but it was probably there before only quieter. No drone. The Monty is a robust and very nice piece of kit - so it should be at the price!

I've been playing with a Special Tool Loan program but being a Procrastinator...

Since I'm keeping my MK, I will make it available to local PP or PCA member to try it on.

So what we need is a loaner program that no matter where you live, you can offer or request a muffler. So; Muffler Loan Program
