87 carrera with SSI and dansk 2 in 2 out modification

Morning gents.

Trying to fit a sport muffler 2in 2 out in the carrera.

I'm doing this in my garage floor so vision and space are limited.

It seems that the muffler is too big-tall for the space. The valance is out BTW

I read you have to modify something in the carrera to install this muffler. I haven't found anything in the forum. Only this from a vendors website.

Thank you for the help. F.

On my 77S , all i needed to do was to cut the valence to allow the 2nd pipe/tip to exit.

regards,

Me, too. Only had to cut the valence (an easy, straight cut) on my '76.

Garage
Got this photo from another post. Could this indentation on the back side of the muffler be causing your problem?

Dansk
Some pics of the underside would help. Is that possible? Did you install the SSI heat exchangers and the Dansk muffler together or separately? If together, I believe the factory crankcase oil line must be changed to the earlier under- or over-the clutch housing type. If separately, what muffler was in there previously?

Did you use the proper, thick flange SSI heat exchangers for your Carrera or the early thin flanged version? Not sure if the incorrect heat exchanger would move the muffler to a different install position.

The additional tailpipe as an obstruction is too obvious.

The car has SSI installed for more than 10 years.
Currently running a 1974 2 in 1 out stock muffler.

The 2in 2 out sport Dansk muffler was donated from a 1977 car with SSIs that I removed personally. This muffler doesn't go into the 1987 carrera with SSI.

I found more info from Dansk part numbers. This are mufflers for cars with SSIs

92511SD muffler that fits midyears and SC ( which is what I got.)

92512SD muffler that fits carreras

So there is a small difference between the cars and muffler that makes them not interchangeable. And they look the same on pictures. Maybe is that indentation. I read that you can modify something to make them fit in either car.

It seems that the carrera muffler space is smaller than the SC/midyear. Once you start tightening the nuts in the exhaust flanges you can't make the muffler sit all the way up. Leaving a 2mm gap in the exhaust gasket.

Anybody knows what that mod is before I start banging, grinding and cutting?

I will take pics soon, thanks a lot

With enough effort, skill and/or $$, you can make most anything fit. Where is the muffler obstruction?

AFAIK, there haven't been reports of fitting the 2in/2out Dansk to that range of 911s.

If it's JUST a matter of misaligned flanges and a small distance, a skilled muffler shop can "bend" the short muffler inlet tubes with strategic pie-slices, then re-weld; or remove the muffler inlet flanges, then readjust their angle (or the SSI exhaust outlet flanges).

Just to confirm; you have thick flange SSI heat exchangers on your Carrera?
