sorry for this thread guys.........i need opinions to my cars worth.

in an earlier thread i mentioned that i'm selling my 85' targa.
i've only had 2 people look so far, nethier seemed to have a "porsche" lust and were more concerned with how they will be able to pay for it (i won't trade), haven't heard back from them.
here's what i have...
85' carerra targa gp white.......average repaint
some stone chips in front valance.
100,900 miles.
limited records
drivers seat bolster has slightly worn through
needs steering wheel recovered (starting to chunk)
syncros in first tired
a/c pump seized
fairly new yoko intermediates
brakes work great (ebrake needs adjusted)
new clutch 10,000 miles ago
targa doesn't leak
1 tinytiny crack in dash by defroster vent
it runs perfectly and is very strong all the way to redline
full tool kit/spare/jack
power windows/locks

i'm thinking i can very easily get $16,000 out of it, what do you think?
locally identical year/targa in better shape are going for 20-25k
here's mine

thanks in advance my bretheren

Throw in a few of those lesbians from your barrel and $16,000 should be no problem!

I think you *might* be able to get $16K, but not really "very easily." I think that would be about the top of what you could expect - and I'd be very happy to get that amount as the seller.

Repainted, with an "average" job - that's gonna hurt.
Cosmetic issues (worn seat, crack on dash, stone chip - may not be big issues but make it tougher to sell - can you clean that stuff up?)
Tired 1st gear
Limited records, busted AC, etc.

$20-25K is pretty rich for an 85 Targa these days - $25K would buy a close to "best in the world" example of an '85.

Overall, a solid car....I'd say keep looking for the right buyer...from a guy who reads the ads in our state's largest paper daily, your price isn't too far out of line. Suggestion: do work on cosmetics, focus on the areas that cost little to nothing to clean up. Pretend you are prepping to enter a concours....clean sells! Are you looking for something newer, or older?

Cool

I saw bell's car..I think that a street person will see a project car..the routine street person wants to see glitter/ego/exotic..a used car dealer would spend $500 and get top dollar for it, IMO..anyway bell, I would go to a local PCA event/tech session/DE/auto X and feel it out...................Ron

the car has been sleeping in the garage and about as clean as i can get it
i'm planning a build of a 73' rs lookalike with either a 3.2 or a 930 engine (i've been leaning towards the turbo )
as soon as the targa is gone i can start aquiring stuff, the plan is to have it done completely NEXT winter, it'll be stripped to the bone and made "new", it's going to be a fun build (and expensive). i'm going to miss having a 911 for next summer but i think the end result will be worth it.
i've put alot of time to get the car where it is now, and have reciepts for everything since i bought it (at 87,000 miles).

Out of 113 cars on autotrader, 1985 and 1986 combined in an "any distance" search, the Average asking price is $21,279.00.
You'll get $16k for yours' , no problem. If you were in Cali., or at least close to there, I would say it would take time. These cars are just not that popular on the east coast. Good luck.

In SoCal, it's maybe a $15K car. To "easily" sell it you'd be down around $12-13K. The strikes against it are the repaint, color, targa, ac, syncros, interior wear, time of year.

I saw cars with lower miles and most everything working asking in the mid-high teens. If I were you, I would at the very least put a new steering wheel and seat covers on and adjust the e-brake. The other stuff gets into more serious money. Try and make a better experience for the prospective buyer...improve anything they end up touching.

bell, seems you're getting the typical Akron area response. i.e. I'll trade you such and such yada yada. This is very annoying, I was dead set on selling my racecar motor awhile back at way below value only asking $5000 for a 650HP decked out race motor with all papers, I was offered cars, boats, Harleys, people that only wanted part of the motor, in the end nobody had cash. Then I popped it up on the corral.net, a Mustang and Ford forum and had 8 very interested buyers with cash and my younger brother steps in with a deal I couldn't pass up and we just finalized this weekend. I got a '78 widebody targa roller with turbo suspension and boxes upon boxes of parts and his old show truck now in need of a repaint a lifted and heavily modded '84 Nissan 4x4.

Bottom line, either list it to a larger audience or wait for the right local buyer but put up with a bunch of folks who don't have any money or don't know about financing or judt don't know. Value? Around here given the relative scarcity I'd say $16k+ would be fair.

If your interested BTW, I know where a Carrera in decent shape with a running 3.2 with SSI's and a 3.2 core with new 3.6 crank is, it's a sunroof coupe project car but could easily be backdated/modded into your RSR. Hint: same place I got my 912, my "new" targa roller and my "new" truck. Seems being a Ford engineer gives people wild visions of Aluminum bodied Cobra Kit cars with FULL RACE stroker smallblocks on the STREET! PM me for details and pics. (not for sale ATM since he's "thinking" of putting it together and selling it, yeah right!)

I gotta say fix the easy stuff like nostatic said.

You can usually find a decent steering wheel in the classifieds (I think I saw one recently on Rennlist, but it might be brown). The hand brake is simple. Just crank up the star wheels thru the inspection hole on the rear rotors. A/C is kind of a turn-off to the average buyer. Yes, many around here pull the stuff out, but that's still unappealing to the regular shmoe or someone just getting into his/her 1st Porsche.

Best of luck to you "bro."

Good to see a reasonable price set on your car. No BSing by bell here. He's telling everything about the car and not sugar coating any of it. Needs this........... doesn't need that.......... this could use a little help, etc. Thumbs up to bell for being straightforward about the car.
