Another 911 no start
I've used the search feature and found a lot of good information.
Go ahead and flame me - I've got a 1989 911 that is a Garage Queen. It quit on me while driving around last summer. I've bench tested the fuel pump and it does not click, run or make any noise. I have purchased a new fuel pump, bench tested it and it runs. I have installed a new DME ? relay that is under the drivers seat. I checked the hot/red wire at the fuel pump with test light to battery ground, no 12 volts. I checked the red/hot wire at the fuel pump with test light to the fuel pump negative wire, no 12 volts. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You |

Welcome aboard 89 3.2!
Okay, have you checked the #3 fuse on the #2 Fuse Block? ( that would be 6th fuse when you look over your driver side fender on to your fuse panel, from right to left ) make sure it is not blown, melted and shrank. Even it if looks good spin it to insure it is sitting right and tight. Put a DVM to insure you are getting 12+ volts. Post your findings please ![]() Jim

Ok, Thank You -I will check that when I get home tonight. I had also read where relay under seat should click, have not checked on that yet. Appreciate any info to get this running. :-)

There's a procedure I don't recall the pins you jumper on the DME relay harness but it will power up your fuel pump. IIRC you have to turn the engine over to get power to the fuel pump. I believe it has something to do with the speed and reference sensors IIRC. I think I read that it was a safety feature to keep the pump from pumping in the event of an accident where the engine shutoff with the key on.
I could be wrong and I'm sure someone will let me know if I am. |

Yes, there is a tester you can build to bypass the DME relay at the relay connector. It is in the Bentley Manual.
Yes, car has to be running for the pump to work. Safely jack her up, and place jack stands for extra safety and ask a helper to start her and touch the pump to see if it is pumping/vibrating, I would also check to see if you get 12+ volts there. But if the #3 fuse is faulty it will not pump. This is how I check for sparks, pull that fuse and check for spark at the plugs.

The car is already on a hoist. Using some jumper wires I could get the test light just below drivers door. I have power at the pump during cranking ! Tomorrow I will empty a 5 gallon can into another car and fill it with non-ethanol gas for the Porsche, put everything back together and take a test drive. Updates tomorrow.
Thank You |

Check the OHMs on the CHTS, ref and speed sensors while you at it.

And it RUNS ! New fuel pump, the car starts and runs. I'll try taking the old one apart to see what went wrong.
I had replaced the relay under drivers seat. I now have two spares. I'll have to try swapping the two previous relays to see if they also allow the car to start and run. Sorry for the delay - Charter internet was down yesterday. Draco - I'll have to ask you to point me to a post with more information about CHTS, speed sensors etc. I was a mechanic some 35 years ago. I'm able to do basic things, but don't have much for technical equipment. |

All you need is a good Digital Volt Meter (DVM). Check the ohms at the 3 connectors right behind the heater blower motor in the engine bay. The top one is white ( yellowed out most likely )Cylinder head temperature Sensor (CHTS) the two black ones the same shaped connectors Reference and Speed Sensors.
Remove the banana shaped plastic heater blower hose then you will see clearly the metal bracket harness lock holding three connectors then with a pin tool remove the wire locks for the connectors carefully and don't drop them. Remove connector one per test so as not to mix up the black ones. Stick the probes in the male side and take a OHM reading and post. car must be cold. Once readings are noted, place wire lock back on and then finish with the metal lock, replace heater blower plastic hose.

BTW CONGRATS!
sensor check is just a check no need if you are set. If you had over 80k+ miles on that old pump it was pretty much ready to go.

Car has right at about 5900 miles.
I'll have to check those wires next weekend. Need to wash car and put the front trunk liner back in the car, change the oil and filter. Thank You for information. Nice to have the car running ! :-) |

Nope, presently it has 5993 miles. I purchased it from Prestige Porsche in Lakewood (Denver) in 1994 with 909 miles. Then in 1999 I drove it from Wa state to Denver area, up thru Yellowstone, into Montana (family history) and back to Wa state. With the rise in prices lately I have pondered the idea of selling ?
