Which fender mounted oil cooler is best?

B&B or the Carrera cooler?

I'm installing a 3.6 now and would like to try cooling it with a fender mounted cooler. Any ideas?

I don't think you are going to be able to cool a 3.6 with a single fender-mounted cooler if you drive it hard or in hot weather. There have been some extensive threads on this in the past (search under "3.6 conversion"). You need a Carrera cooler in the fender AND a B&B in the front spoiler, from what I have gathered. I'm sure Thom or Bill or others who have BTDT will weigh in on this.

Moses, its hard enough to keep a 3.0 cool with only the fender mounted cooler on DE days in the summer heat. With the lack of the engine mounted cooler on the 3.6, you'll probably have to run both, or a fender cooler on both sides (but then you have problems with air circulation). My plan is to go with the B&B and single fender mount for with my 3.0. The fender mounted will cool in stop and go traffic, and the front mounted will cool when moving. Ay plans on how to fab the front valance if you go that route?

Moses.....I changed over the brass row cooler to the Carrera one on my euro delivery SC.....I plan on driving the car with the new 3.6 home with just THAT cooler. BTW, no fan.....and I got a REALLY good deal on a new one at Parts Heaven. VERY surprised.

I bought the BAT supplied MOCAL cooler and adapter kit for the front valance and will cover it with the 930 style splitter that I picked up at Ventura Auto Fest.

I can post my impressions soon, as the motor install will be done late this week or early next.

BTDT

I went thru these gyrations about a year ago.

I don't know that there's too much of a difference between any two brands of coolers, assuming the sizes were comparable. What does matter is getting air to and through said cooler. T hat's more important in my opinion.

What I don't understand is why they made the inlet and outlet on the same end. Wouldn't it be a lot more efficent to have the outlet at the opposite end, so the oil has to travel the entire length of the cooler before returning to the tank?

A B&B in the spoiler will certainly provide more than adequate cooling as long as the car moves periodicly, mine operates at ~85-90&degC under any condition. The Carrera in the fender w/ the B&B will be an insurance policy against being stuck w/ zero motion on a really hot day and not having the option of pulling off the road. I don't have a fender mount so my plan (so far not put into effect in the last 7 yrs) is to shut it down and pull off the road.

Bill Boat used one of his own fender mount w/ fan as the sole cooler on his 3.6 transplant in the Az. desert.

When the I/O ports are both in the passenger side end it is a double pass cooler(this is good as you get almost twice the cooling in the same space) and it's easier to plumb.

All my research suggests this isn't that great an idea too.

There is some interesting stuff about cooling about mid-way down this thread:

The double-back 'U-path' of the B&B or any 'same-end' outlet cooler ... provides twice the restriction, but also twice the length path for the oil to flow through. The oil velocity through the cooler is twice as fast as when outlets are at opposite ends ... and has twice the area of tubes for the oil to flow through!

The well-known Mazda cooler is similar-sized, though quite a bit less expensive.

I have a Mazda one (plus the engine one) on my 3.6 level of hp 3.2 short stroke.

Seems to cool it fine but I've never really tested it.

Mazda one was very cheap (US$80) but required mods to fit.

(edit) Hahaha - that puny starter in the background is long gone. It is an 0.8hp one and couldn't turn the engine over when it (the engine) was hot...

I got a Nippon Denso one machined to fit - NZ$350 for 2kW. I could probably drive the car around on that starter..
