This car just keeps on making me smile !

OK, there's nothing "technical" in this post... but I couldn't find another place for it ... sorry 'bout that.

Having been "out of Porsches" for some thirty years, I had been looking for "that certain car" for some time. So, earlier in the year, I sent suitcases of money to a guy that I had never met to buy a car I hadn't seen... really out of character for me! Well, actually, I had done considerable due diligence, so I thought the overall risk to be small.

While waiting for the car to arrive here in Texas, I fully expected there to be a disappointment or two... or three, or many! But when it arrived, it was better than I expected. Knowing lots of places to look where rust and other nastiness lurks, I checked the car thoroughly... no disappointments! My friend of more-years-than-either-of-us-like-to-admit, Ed Mayo checked all the "secret" I didn't know where to look... again no disappointments.

Lucky me in that I found the car right here on Pelican, and the seller was an honest, stand-up guy!

Anyway, I am going through the car, attending to those tiny details that will transform this exceptional car into a spectacular car, and every day, this car just makes me happy! Most everywhere I look, the car looks like it was assembled yesterday... but it is 27 years old, and is still wearing its original paint!

Thanks for indulging me in my gratitude for such a great car!

Oh, by the way, it drives great!!

Smiling,

Rob

Thank you very much!

A mostly-original '87 M491 optioned car with 110,000 miles. I am the 3rd owner, and I have been in touch with the other two... both long-time Porsche guys who obviously loved this car. The interior is virtually perfect, with zero discernible wear on the seats; even the foam padding is still firm. Everything works!

The car had top end service recently, and while they had the thing apart, I had the heads milled for twin plugs (although as of now, there are just non-functioning plugs in the lower holes!... prepared for further adventures on the slippery slope in the near future). Also, since receiving the car, I have replaced all four hood/deck struts, lower window rubber trim, tail light seals, new spring plate bushings, removed the ancient Clifford alarm system, and lots of other little details.

I have installed new leather door panels (from APPBIZ)... OEM look but with perforations for the speakers (I sealed the originals which are in very nice condition and stored them away). I built (from baltic birch and fiberglass mat/resin) recessed mounts for new 4" Kicker front speakers... they are small but sound quite good, and I like the look a lot (photo of my recessed speakers below before being covered up by the new door panels).

Next Tuesday, the car is going to a local painter/restorer for a respray on the hood, front bumper and valence, as well as both side mirrors. I can't wait to get it back!

Plans for later in the year include new carpet throughout...

Dang, this is fun!

Rob

Now, there's a great idea! I love to take it our early Saturday or Sunday mornings, leave the windows down and listen to all that mechanical music just behind me... glorious! It just drives so, so great... I do need a photo of my goofy ear-to-ear grin!

And, I forgot to post a photo of what the doors look like with the new door panels installed... so, here 'tis...

Hey Rob,

Congrats on the cool car. It looks really clean. Can you tell me about the wheels. They looks perfect with the car. Curious about the 3.4 as I always thought the M491 packaged body, brakes, suspension items but not the engine.

Congrats!

I know the feeling! Mines not a M491, but lots of love went into this one. I can't stop staring at it. Love these 911s!

Thanks... the wheels are the OEM Fuchs that came with the car. They were re-done by Al Reed in July 2006 (According to the paperwork I got with the car, his contact info is: Al Reed Polishing, Inc., 3010 E. Coronado Ave. #A, Anaheim CA 92806 - 714-632-3907). Al called it "Frosted Finish"

The 3.2 to 3.4 conversion was done by Bill Brewster Porsche (San Clemente, CA) about 7,000 miles ago... OEM cylinders bored to 98mm and JE 10.5:1 pistons shimmed out to 9.8:1 CR... 964 cams and who knows what else. The previous owner was "disappointed" in its performance, but its first trip to Ed Mayo's place revealed that full throttle at the pedal was not getting full throttle at the engine... yikes... no wonder he was "disappointed." Of course, had he not been disappointed, I may not have the car!

I had my '77 converted from CIS to Webers (when the air box popped its top!)... I really liked that; may, just may consider doing PMOs to this '87... don't tell my wife!
