1985 911 ventilation

Hi guys.

I just got the entire automatic heating system rebuilt on my 3.2 Carrera. So everything seems to work properly and I finally get heat in the cabin thanks to a very dedicated repair shop.

I just wonder how to have outside air (not heated) blown by the center outlets in the middle of the dash. I've read in my owner's book that the middle lever (on the dash) activates the center outlets but nothing happens when I move it.

Any input would be appreciated.

Nico

Center is for your AC only. Outside air comes from the top of the dash windshield vents and/or footwell ports depending on lever position.

Only way to get outside air is to delete the AC hoses and mod and add the fresh air blower to the center vents.

It's funny 'cause that's not what's written in my owner's manual. Page 36 :

''Center outlets

Outlets in center of dashboard are for outside air only. The vanes in the outlets are adjustable to the side and up and down.''

LOL, it sure does and page 20 foldout diagram shows #12 as fresh air vent. WRONG! Cooled air vent when AC is working but never Fresh Air :-P.

Now the sides have all 3, cooled, fresh and heated.

Let me assure you fresh/outside air only enters from windshield, footwell and partly sides vents.

AC only comes from center/side vents and the bow tie on our 84-86 3.2s

I think the 3.2 911 is the only car in the world that does not blow cool air on your face!

Mine does. You just need a/c.

I wrote an article about buying my car for the local Houston PCA magazine. I think this best describes it:

"The 911 series cars have a rather byzantine climate control system with separate fresh air, recirculating AC and exhaust manifold in-cabin heating in three separate systems."

You are exactly correct, Michael T. I have an 84 911 and an 84 928. The 928 is much more modern, although still not quite fully automatic climate control.

Nico,
I'm don't know if anything changed with the 3.2 cars, but take a look at the first drawing in the link below. It shows the flow of heat/fresh/AC air through the various vents on the '77S & SCs with A/C. The second drawing shows a system w/o A/C, where the center dash vent is indeed used for fresh air (only).
