What is ZDDP level of Castrol GTX 20W50?

I know this has been beat to death. I have had Brad Penn in my car for the last 2 oil changes. My wrench is telling me that my car leaks more with the BP and I should switch back to Castrol GTX which I have run in my car for many years, prior to the BP switch.

Too low for your engine.

You can search the oil thread for the exact number....but IIRC it's about 900-1000 ppm, at least 200 ppm short of what we need. Where is the engine leaking from? Are you leaving puddles or just a drip here and there?

I think everbody has a different experience, I went from Castrol to Brad Penn and my car seems to leak a little less. At the very least, pour in one (red) bottle of STP oil treatment.

Ever since I put in Castrol GTX 10W/40 high mileage (for Winter) I noticed more leaks.

Are you going over to Canton (Beaver petroleum) to get it?

Sure wish I was in the market for your 911 last month, beauty! Want to talk this spring about it?

With all do respect, this is a little silly in my book. You're wondering about ZDDP levels and your engine is leaking oil. I would think you would want to fix the leaks first.

1) How many miles or hours on your engine?
2) Has it ever been rebuilt?
3) Can you easily access the culprits to fix the leaks?
4) Your engine is now 27 years old if it's never been touched...

Suggesting that ZDDP at one level or another may be the cause of increased leaks is very dubious at best.

BGCarrera32,
It is 2 different issues. My motor has 106,000 miles on it and did not leak until I put Brad Penn in it. It leaks dime size from the valve covers. No big deal. The ZDDP level coud be a big deal on how long this motor will last before needing a rebuild. The ZDDP level has no relationship to the leak.

You should buy your Brad Penn from Charles Navarro. He has been more than gracious in lending his monumental expertise to the foremost discussion thread in this forum on oil protective qualities for flat tappet applications using appropriate amounts of zinc leading to overall reliability and engine happiness. He's one of the good guys.

If you look at the Ultimate Oil Thread you will find that Castrol is OK but it's protective properties (TBN amongst others) go away very quickly. I think if youy change your oil every 2500-3000 miles, Castrol is ok but ther are other products that provide longer (hence better) protection.

I'm currently switching to Brad Penn for my next oil change. Never used it, but heard many good things about it.

My off topic question is that on his site it say that SAE 40 is better for vintage and aircooled cars. I love in NY (Long Island) and prob will end up doing a few track days when weather gets better. You think I should go with the 40 or just do 20W50???

I believe that Castrol High Mileage has more ZDDP than regular Castrol.

I think CN posted that about a thousand oil threads ago.

This is the response I received from Castrol

I meant to say 20W50 but anyway here is what they said:

"Thank you for contacting Castrol,

Castrol North America does not manufacture GTX in a 20w-40 grade.

The latest API SM/ILSAC GF-4 category calls for reduced Zinc and Phosphorus levels to allow extended catalyst life in current model vehicles. There appear to be field issues associated with the SM/GF-4 oil's level of antiwear in the classic car engines known as flat tappet cam engines. The current late model passenger car engines are not flat tappet cam engines and have no reported field issues related to the level of antiwear chemistry in the SM/GF-4 oils.

Product Recommendations for Flat Tappet (Solid Lifter) Cam Engines:
Castrol Syntec 20W-50 (Recent reformulation identified by "Recommended for Classic Cars" text on back label) (min Zn = 0.12 = 1200 ppm)(full synthetic)

New Motorcycle Products
Castrol Power RS GPS 10W-30, 10W-40 and 20W-50 (min Zn = 0.12 = 1200 ppm) Castrol Power RS R4 10W-50 and 5W-40 (min Zn = 0.12 = 1200 ppm) Castrol Power RS V-Twin 20W-40 and 20W-50 (min Zn = 0.12 = 1200 ppm)

The previous owner of my car was pretty religious about oil changes and used castrol GTX only.

When I started having valve guide issues - I decided to [/cough]upgrade[cough] at the same time.

Well - my exhaust valves were all worn and had to be replaced. The case was stained amber color, my layshaft bearings were showing copper, my cams were pitted. 5 rocker arms had to be replaced because they were showing too much wear. This is on an engine with 56K miles.

I'll only use Royal Purple Motorcycle oil or Brad Penn from now on.

+1 for brad penn, that's the only oil that will grace the inside of my 3.2.
