Flaumeister Part II: Hey Randy W, others.....

In a previous post re: mufflers for SC, some guys mentioned the Flaumeister muffler emits a "raspy" sound. Is this the general concensus? That's the sound i'm looking for in my stock '86 3.2. Want a more raspy, mechanical sound as opposed to a low burbling. (as mentioned in other threads, i'm looking to get a more "Ferrari-like sound, not a Mustang 5.0 sound). OK, no 911 vs Ferrari jokes, please. Just my way of verbalizing my goal of the higher pitched 'grind' of an exotic car, not looking for 'muscle-car' blat.

Thanks.
Mike

Yes, the Flowmaster is a higher pitched mechanical ripping sound, that you can hear at 4K and then gets higher in pitch as the revs climb - more of a scream than the early sport mufflers which are raspy. Not V12 Ferrari pitch but in the ballpark. If you have ever heard an RSR (the Porsche sounds CD comes to mind) then you will know what it sounds like.

I just put one on my otherwise stock '88. It sounds fantastic. At low rpms and if you let off/under engine braking the sound is low, but when you get your foot into it and the revs start to climb the rasp comes out. I will try to get a good recording on my son's laptop tonight. It's hard as the laptop can't handle it when the revs get up there. Maybe if I move the laptop farther from the car it will pick it up better.

The sound is perfect for me, audible at a steady cruise (but not too much), a rumble at idle, and a good wail when you really get on it.

But it's not shiny!

Painted mine black anyway.

Where did you guys get your Flowmasters? Couldn't find them on P.P. website.

Will they bolt up to the stock heatexchangers?

Do the Flaumeisters that will fit 911 only come in TWO OUT configuration?
Will simply plugging up the Right side exhaust tip work? Make it not so loud too, right?

Thanks

A lot of folks go to Jegs . I believe you want the 80 series for the Firebird. You gotta buy some pipes, etc, then have a shop do the fabricating.

A search on *flaumeister* or *flowmaster* should turn up a lot.

Yes you can plug one side, and yes they only come in two out unless you want a passenger side exit. I found a single in/out muffler with the in and out on the same side from Walker, I listed it's PN in the other post. Summit Racing carries Flowmaster mufflers.

How about a Flowmaster two in/two out configuration

Does flowmaster make a two in/two out configuration? How does one use it if they have pre-75 heat exchangers?

Yup, Flowmaster The black one in back, both are upside down in the pic. Or

Bill Verburg's setup

These are both on headers, but could easily be done with standard pre-75 exhaust

Now I'm getting it...

So Quiet Boom, how much does that thing weigh? Looks heavy. Cool, yes. But heavy -- which is a no-no.

Also Quiet Boom

What size Flowmasters are those in the X-pipe photo? Can you make another?

This is a flowmaster race setup (developed by brad@all914.com) some of the 914 guys run. Straight off the header, out the back of the car. Simple and effective.

I have a similar setup on my car at the moment, but I used a larger but still very high-flowing dynomax race muffler. It is far quieter than open pipes from idle to 4K or so (this is a 2.4/four) but at WOT it is extremely loud and raw - barely streetable.

Flowmaster makes a two in two out muffler as well as the one in two out. It's lighter than the stock muffler, but with pipe to fit probably about the same.
The part number for the single in dual out is 42583 and the dual in dual out part number is 42582.

I originally ordered mine from www.Jegs.com, but they were back ordered for about a month so I ordered it from www.summitracing.com for the same price and got it in about 4 days.
The two middle links have the sound of my sunglasses vibrating against the case of the laptop throughout in case anyone hears that sound and wonders what it is.
Here are the links for the flowmaster sounds...

Dr. Mark

That sounds utterly sweet. You guys are starting to sway me toward the Flow. What about weight, though? I'm not into "heavy."

Anyone know the answer? How much might an X-pipe-like setup weigh?

Thanks

Okay: that pretty much answers my question about the weight.

Thanks.

My X-pipe setup with dual mufflers weighs the same as my 2 in/out flowmaster setup, 25lbs.

BTW I'm considering selling custom X-pipe setups like the one on my Pelican page if you're interested.

Mike (Mik911),

Is this the sound that you are talking about?

http://home.swbell.net/smasraum/911sitting.mp3

That's what things sound like if you just take the muffler off of your '86. It's really loud inside the car, but if you put a tip on that brings the sound out from under the valence it is not as loud inside the car.

It would likely be too loud for most people to drive everyday, but it sounds SO sweet!!
