fiberglass door vs safety

just been thinking...

if one installs a glass door is a full cage a requirement? I can't imagine a T-bone accident with a glass door.

but then again the steel door desn't have much reinforcement either...but it is metal

I've heard of guys installing fiberglass roofs, but that is on top of a cage no?

also the new BMW CSi M3 has a cargbon fiber hood without a cage...

am I missing something?

MJ

US doors have a reinforcement bar inside I believe.

ok.

I took my 65 lb (ea.) stock doors out, and replaced it with a 8 lbs glass door....

you will need more protection..

Im installing a glass roof too..... as low as possible to the cage to lower the Cf as well as Cg

the doors in the early '70s got the reinforcments. I believe.... my '69 doors were heavy all on there own.

If you run FG doors, you need a cage, with nascar style cross braces. Trust me, you don't want to be in a t-bone acident without them.

Safety-Schmafety! Everyone knows that you want to be thrown-clear in an accident. Getting rid of those heavy seatbelts will save a few pounds too!

For the track, cage. For the street, they're not as safe as steel - but hey, some people ride motorcycles.

Yep, it's all relative. The earliest cars didn't have any door beams and I'm not sure how many people suffered intrusion injuries/casualties due to this compared to the later, heavier US safety-beam doors.

I may at some point put fg or cf skins on my race car but it's got a welded 8pt cage with a high "X" door bar....stronger than any wimpy beam.

Yeah I'm pretty sure theres a beam inside normal doors. I wouldnt want to think of the possibility of the fg shattering and coming into the cabin in nice big shards either......

confirming my suspicions...

so on the 911R with its fiberglass door...did it have a steel bar in it? or was it used only for high speed record setting so door bar was not an issue...

what about the M3 CSL...CF roof, no cage...??

PS doesn't the lighter panels, thinner glass, better engine remind you of what porsche used to do to mak 911 models with RS and RSR designations...back when they used to make real sports cars...

MJ,

If you manage to get yourself T-boned by a 4000 lb to 6000 lb minivan or SUV ... a honeycombed Titanium door beam, or a chrome-moly cage won't help, so the FG vs stock door argument is pointless! If you wake up from the coma ... several weeks/months will be gone from your memory, and rehab will be your only concern for numerous months!

Dale Ernhardt had a cage all around him ... and it all ended in milliseconds, when his chin hit the steering wheel!

Active driver avoidance of collisions ... is the only way to survive in a 911! That means attemtion to the entire 360° vicinity around you at all times, thinking ahead, and being prepared to take evasive action from any threat! The handling and braking cabability of your 911 is the best defense you have.
