What weight oil are you NE guys running?
I'm doing my first change on my '80 911SC (First change after complete rebuild) and the previous owner ran Castrol GTX 20-50, I believe. But he lived in Southern Georgia... I'm in Pa. Also, anything to look out for, or tips, other than what Wayne outlines in 101 projects?
I'm definitely overthinking the simplest thing that you can perform on this car, but still. Thanks!! Last edited by Jezza; 09-19-2014 at 06:16 AM.. |

I am in SE PA. I also run 20/50. I used to run Castrol, but then all these freaks on this board convinced me to use Brad Penn.

Chevron Delo 400 Multigrade 15W-40. Stored indoors and not run in the winters due to salt/brine.

I'm in central jersey running 20w50 valvoline vr1. Has a good zinc content, and it seems to run better than my older oil. With these motors stay away from low zinc content found in modern oils

I'm in Canada, no winters but cool seasons.
20/50 and a thermostat on front mounted cooler so that cold oil doesn't blow the heck out of it when I start it cold. ![]() Less smoke than 15/40 and cooler operating temps (never above 180 even in traffic now but saw 210 even with my cooler with 15/40 I have found).

BP 20/50 in PA. Don't plan on driving it when there is salt out.

Seems the key questions here are 1) do you plan to drive it on cold winter days, and (perhaps more importantly) at what temperature does it sit when not in use?
My thought here is that a "heavy" oil is primarily an issue when the oil itself gets very cold and becomes sludgy, as it would offer limited lubrication. If a car spends the night at 5 degrees farenheit, 20w50 oil would likely be compromised until it warms up. OTOH, if the car spends the night in a 60 degree garage, the engine running with 20w50 oil @ 60 degrees would not be compromised when exposed to 5 degree ambient temperatures and the oil would just get warmer as the car warms up. Even though my daily driver targa lives in a heated garage, it spends its days in an unheated parking lot. Since we get some single digit days during denver's winters, I run a lower weight oil during the winter to assure that it won't be compromised when I start it after its been sitting in the cold unheated garage at work all day. |

I went with the 20/50. I travel pretty much all through the winter months and have no desire to drive it in the cold and salt. It sits in a garage, not heated but insulated. So, it never gets horrifically cold in there. Thought you would all enjoy this. I fumbled the drain plug and it went directly into the drain, clogging it and almost instantly overflowed. I jammed my fingers into the pan filled with hot oil as I tried to find the plug. That sucked. ![]() ![]() |

Sounds good, you should check out the local PCA. Its a huge chapter and a great way to meet people in the area. A lot of the people seem to have the newer stuff but there is a solid vintage crowd there as well. I am not in fishtown I'm right in CC by city hall. Regards Dave
