Should this be the new ride?..739hp at the wheels?!

I looked at this one today.

http://www.parkplaceltd.com/vehicle.aspx?stockNo=6349&title=1991%20Porsche%20911%20Turbo%20-%20739hp%202%20Dr%20Coupe&inv=330&vin=WP0AA2964MS480221&pos=36&current=1&size=50&nav=All&filter=(Make='PORSCHE')

Not like I believe much of what the ad says but anyone know this car? Love the exterior color. Interior I'd strip and re-due in black anyway.

Dyno says: ChipC2 turbo Euro 8 (I assume that means a 3.8) EFI

Torque is 606# @ 5800 and peak HP with 15.5 boost at 7500rpm
new injectors @ 60 psi and
1 bar boost

No clue where the dyno is actually from or by whom...

So turbo guys tell me what you really think? Grenade waiting to explode or monster car?
If I were to actually believe the sales pitch it is 2850# and 850 or so at the crank for a 1hp : 3.35# Someone local has gotta know the car if the figures are correct.

I think Randy Blaylock knows of the car, he had mentioned to me a while ago that it was for sale.

Cheers

Congrads on the '79 Eric!

No real idea with this one. Some of the interior is stripped already. If the engine isn't a grenade I think I'd just leave it as is since the body is original. Gotta be some turbo guys here that can tell me more about a high boost 3.8 turbo. Just re-due the interior and turn down the boost to 550HP

I didn't drive it, as I had Tracy and the dogs with me on the drive by. Took a few minutes and looked it over. Obvious track ho...rolled front fenders and shaved rear fenders, new tires 245/295 iirc. Ricaro Pole positions in cloth, tiny ass wheel and a roll bar. Our kind of car

I'll stop by this week and take a look at the reciepts and find out who did the build and how and where the dyno was done. Thinking about asking them to run through my dyno guy to see what the car actually will do at the wheels if the dyno wasn't local.

Geeze Eric start a new thread and tell me/us about your new 930!!!??

like the exterior color big time
also the interior is fine by me
i think you are right to detune that monster a bit so it does implode too quickly
i am sure you could add just the right touches to this car

They tried selling that car on eBay, but either there were no takers, or the reserve was too high.

I remember a purple turbo like that doing a track day at PIR 3 or 4 years ago. It started blowing oil out the turbos and caught fire, melting the rear valance. He put it out with a trackside water hose, and limped the car back to Seattle. The guy said it was something like a full-race GT2 motor with some finicky engine management system he didn't like. Ridiculously fast, though. Maybe it's the same car.

Common sense says that no air-cooled Porsche turbo is going to make 500 hp or more and last more than a thousand hours before needing a rebuild.

I've been to a couple track events with this car. The owners name was Chip and he has since passed away. The car is VERY fast.

Chip told me he was the original owner and that Bob Holcomb built the motor. No idea what condition it's in now but it ran well the last time I saw it.

I think I saw a stock 2004 turbo on Ebay today with <5k on the clock. I think they want $70k for it. The grenade factor scares me, but I don't no anything about turbos.

Did the car have the coils mounted on the rear package tray so that you could see them through the rear window?

Heavily modified turbos can be a risky endeavor. When I bought mine, the overboost solenoid was grounded out and the wastegate had 1.1 springs in it and was hooked up incorrectly so I don't think it was even opening. It was wicked scarey fast and very difficult to drive when the boost kicked in. It was also running super super rich (see above comments about the wastegate not opening and running massive boost. It would load up all 12 of the plugs if it just sat and idled.

With all of that being said, I went down to a .8 bar spring, re-tuned the CIS, replaced all the plug wires and plugs and basically just gave it a nice engine out once over. It has been dead reliable since, and the motor should live a healthy life now.

I really like the 964 turbos, and not just because I own one. Proven motor, with coilovers and the smooth bumpers...

Good luck looking at it Rdane.

Rdane,
Holcumbe is known for building very strong, very expensive engines and components (his intercoolers are works of art). That being said, things can get tremendously expensive when these engines pop. If you are seriously interested in this car, I would contact Bob and ask for specific build details in addition to a very thorough PPI.

Not me. What you don't see in the ebay add would scare most of us off. That and the fact that it has been in and out of a couple of local shops while being sold on consignment at Park Place. To put it kindly the blush is off this rose.

I had a good laugh when the salesman was sticking to the $65K price when they can't "give it away" at $50K on ebay. It's an embarassment even to the typical reputation of used car dealers.

For anyone interested I would suggest a local dyno run to verify the numbers, a oil analysis to see if the engine is still in one piece and a through PPI. All easily done just a few minutes away from Park Place.

That is the needed info the local wrenches, who I trust, are suggesting.

Given what has been done to the car, if it has a clean bill of health the car would be a steal even at 65K. I don't know how long ago Holcombe did the work on this car, and how may hard miles it as seen since then, to replicate this car would be no cheap date.

Since I personally checked out the car and all paperwork months ago.......

SCHNELE is correct.
And that engine represents the ultimate streetable Porsche turbo build.
IF I recall correctly, the car has approx 5k since the engine build.

The 50k thing on EBay is/was a starting bid, and at 50k the reserve is/was not met.
An actual sales price would thus be higher than 50k, how much higher we don't know.
