Ignition timing on a 1981 Euro 911SC

Back in the fall, I installed Carrera chain tensioners. I took the distributor off and paid very close attention to where everything was lined up. I replaced the distributor and set the distributor back where I had marked. The car has run fine since, but before I take the car to DE in May, I'd like to make sure the ignition timing is just right.

What is the procedure for setting the ignition timing? Also, what specs should I use? I've heard that, since I have a higher compression Euro engine, the ignition timing should be advanced a little to prevent detonation.

Any hints?

Thanks.

I think you mean the advance (Edit: I mean timing) should be retarded to avoid detonation.
I'm a few weeks away from setting timing on '81 Euro motor and I look forward to what you find out.

Just curious: Is there no mark on the pulley? Like a Z1 and a 5deg. mark before the Z1? That,s how it is on the SC 3 Liter US.

Yes, there are marks. I was just wondering if anyone would recommend me setting the timing differently to avoid detonation on my higher compression engine.

A question I've pondered for a long time. My timing mark is way out there...without looking, probably 39 degrees or more. The only problem though is the label on top of the fan housing -- the timing has been scratched off with a note: DO NOT USE! I'm sure this is because it resided in CA for many years, but I'm still wrestling with taking off the after market smog add-ons, and setting it back to the "recommended" setting.

Steve: What would the original manual recommend? The timing is related to octane rating of the fuel. What is the rating in Europe compared to the US? Here in Canada, we can have anything from 87 to 94 octane. I usually go with 91/92.

Well, my original manual is in German, so I don't really know what it says for ignition timing.

I have the same engine, 930/10. The label on the fan housing clamp says 25 degrees BTDC at 4000 rpm, vacuum hose off. This is where I set it on my car, and it works okay. Be careful what you run for plugs. They're different for the 930/10 from what the US spec motor runs. I run the Sunoco Ultra, which is supposed to be 94 octane, I think. On a real hot day, I can get some pre-ignition with the other "high test" brands. No problem, that I can hear, with the Ultra.

Steve: Your manual may say something like: Zündung............or: Zündvorstellung........Or, you could find someone to translate.
