How can I trace an engines history?

If you have the engine # is there a way to link it to a VIN then check the cars history? What is the best approach? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the later models, but in early 911's the engine numbers aren't sequential...they jump all over the place in relation to the VIN numbers. Still, I think there MUST be a way...
My reasoning is that in the pre-Kardex days, I simply wrote the factory, giving the VIN#, asking about my car. I got a letter back giving the engine number. Today? I don't know if the factory would be willing to help...but an airmail stamp to Germany costs 80 cents. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so it might be worth a try...
