Shifting Problem

I have recently encounterd a shifting problem. Shifting up is ok. When I shift from 5th to 4th I get a slight grind before going into gear. Is this a bushing r&r due to linkage letting the lever nick reverse or could it be a 4th gear syncro? I have and 83 SC with 915 Trans.

Thanks

When was the last time you replaced all of the bushings? If you haven't done it yet -- do it. It sounds like the bushings in the shift coupler may be getting sloppy, causing the nicking problem. You might be able to simply adjust the coupler without replacing the bushings, but if you haven't done the bushings yet you'll be amazed at how much better the car shifts after you've done the work. Look in Pelican's Tech Articles for the article on shifting improvements. It will explain how to adjust the coupler. Also, Wayne's book does a good job as well.

Good luck!
