No more Targa Top wind noise

With the cold weather coming on I dreaded putting the Targa top on. The wind howl at anything over 60 MPH made driving a chore, not a pleasure.

I learned about longer Targa top clips from this board and decided to give them a try.

I am here to tell you...they worked!!!!!!!! Wind noise is now down to coupe-like levels and I get to drive through the chilly season.

WooooooHooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

One thing. My clips weren't holding and would pop off if I hit a bump in my '88. I had the top restored and when it returned with the same clips they held extremely well. I believe that when things are less than adequate in the top longer clips will just be a bandaid instead of fixing things.

Not condemning, just concerned. It might be a good measure while you are saving up to have the whole thing done since it's not expensive.

Got them from Performance Products (sorry Wayne its the 1st time I have strayed).

It is a very slightly larger version of the original with a rubberized finish. Simple to install and quite effective.

Question Do the bigger clips work?

Has anyone else tried the bigger clips listed here?

My top is loose at the fold points (Yes, I do fold it.) and the front edge sticks up above the windshield frame about 1/4 inch. Right about 50 mph the noise starts. My theory is some fluid dynamics thing makes the air flow become noisey at that condition. I don't feel any air leaks.

How can I tighten the top left-to-right to reduce the wind noise?

I believe the "long clips" is an urban legend.

I'm a bit embarassed, but when I bought my '82 Targa and drove it back from Little Rock, AR, I actually duct taped the front edge down. At least I used black duct tape so you really couldnt tell It did make the interior MUCH quieter!

I looked up the part number on Pelican, but there's no picture. I'm a bit leary of buying something without a pic to see what I'm buying.

Ghia,

It wasn't duct tape. It was research! You prove my point that the flow distribution over the top is what makes the noise. When you added the duct tape, there was a smooth surface for the air flow.

We need some engineers to weigh it on this issue.

In around 1981 or 1982 I noticed small cracks starting in the leading fold edge as well as breaking threads in the front edge seem at the same location. Took it to an auto upolsterer and had it resewn.
Haven't folded that top since!
Its either on the car or in the garage on its nice little storage rack.
If it rains while I'm out without it, I just drive faster!
I did replace the headliner about 10-12 years ago.
Haven't tried the duct tape idea.

The duct tape idea is great, and I have used it on specific areas of the car to figure out where the noise was coming from. The fold points are always the trouble areas, but the edges at the front can not settle in if you have pins that are too fat for the holes (grease 'em), or have a later seal in an earlier car (early seals no longer available).

After two years, my Targa skin will be redone again! Why? Because I decided to perform a restretch on the sides only. BIG mistake, you have got to pull the front edge down or, by stretching the sides only, you end up with looseness at the front.

This time, I am going to go down to the burlap and replace that, along with the rivets for the alum. pans.

Way to Go! I Like that.
Others being "sensible" and cautious, by slowing down and baulking - they just don't understand that anything less than 50mph in the rain and us topless Targa drivers will get WET

Urban legend?

Don't know about that, but I do know that since I put the urban legends on my targe top, its much quieter.
